Nobody cares if the output is aesthetically pleasing, because the process, the act itself, the limitation of a single human mind and the resulting creations that capture that one single inimitable human experience... is what makes a creation worth paying attention

It is a neighborhood group: four people were kidnapped at the corner drugstore. A friend a mile away sends a Slack message: she was at the scene when masked men assaulted and abducted two people on the street. A plumber working on my pipes is distraught, and I find out that two of his employees were kidnapped that morning. A week later it happens again. An email arrives. Agents with guns have chased a teacher into the school where she works. They did not have a warrant. They dragged her away, ignoring her and her colleagues’ pleas to show proof of her documentation. That evening I stand a few feet from the parents of Rayito de Sol and listen to them describe, with anguish, how good Ms. Diana was to their children. What it is like to have strangers with guns traumatize your kids. For a teacher to hide a three-year-old child for fear they might be killed. How their relatives will no longer leave the house. I hear the pain and fury in their voices, and I wonder who will be next. Understand what it is to pray in Chicago. On September 19th, Reverend David Black, lead pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Chicago, was praying outside the ICE detention center in Broadview when a DHS agent shot him in the head with pepper balls. Pepper balls are never supposed to be fired at the head because they can seriously injure, or even kill. “We could hear them laughing as they were shooting us from the roof,” Black recalled. He is not the only member of the clergy ICE has assaulted. Methodist pastor Hannah Kardon was violently arrested on October 17th, and Baptist pastor Michael Woolf was shot with pepper balls on November 1st. Understand what it is to sleep in Chicago. If you say 'heteronormative' or 'unhoused person' or 'food insecurity' you're basically talking gibberish and nobody can understand you but if you say you can see inflammation in children at the airport and that vaccines lower IQ or that germs are a myth you get to fire all the scientists.

SURF Before, you were a marching band, but we were never close, your piccolo so high, a bird, a whistle, a soft breeze, but tonight the TV nurse said "aneurysm", and I thought how they took a bone saw to your dreams, how they scattered your grey in the wet blue of Bar Harbor - you always wanted to go - and how distance doesn't matter so much anymore if I am in a living room and you're a phantom. I pretend sometimes I am there in Maine, and we play telephone, just two shells - conchs, no string between, just endless echoes between my prairie and your coast, and the ocean is blue instead of red sunset in your skull - now the truth is waves are to ashes as bomb is to ghost, and the wheat here rolls like surf, but silent. CANNON Your mouth is a cannon, its perfect O aimed at my battle-scarred lips, and the ball of your tongue connects with mine midair where we combust - the shockwave leaves only a wet echo and the flak of our falling above the concrete trenches where we carved our names. HOW TO EAT A TORNADO You use your hands, the ones that carved runes in the sky with blood orange lightning. Wrestle world-breath - sweet green inhales, exhales, cloudspun tofu, windwhipped seeds. Plant your fearless mouth firmly against the wild blue storm, let it kiss hard your cracked-earth skin, breathe the bitter apocalypse. Finally, swallow.

happy Father’s Day! here are a few of mine from over the years: “Edna,” originally published in HAD, “My daughter asks for a sugar cube before bed…” originally published in my book Ways We Vanish, and “View from Eurydice’s Shoulder,” originally published in Poet Lore.
EDNA My daughter is bored so I tell her silverfish are neither silver nor a fish, but a spoon-dull insect that loves kitchens bathrooms the mouths of children. Silverfish! Silverfish! she squeals, the word peeling from her lips and crawling down her legs. She watches me knead the day’s dough and asks if Kleenex are used to clean necks. The TV says a crane collapsed off 34th and she wants to know if it's because the crane was thirsty. Some afternoons we visit the neighborhood pool and even though she can barely swim my daughter isn't afraid. She's so unafraid it makes me afraid. She loves it when I pick her up and throw her as far away as possible. She loves to paddle back and scream Again! Again! But she loves it most when I swim away as fast as I can, when my back becomes a shore she’s trying to reach. My daughter's named the pool Edna. Sometimes Edna helps her reach me. When it's time to go my daughter says "See you soon, Edna." Every day I am terrified in new ways. “My daughter asks for a sugar cube before bed…” because a horse keeps visiting her at night. Just a single cube, which she cradles in the center of her palm, tiptoeing up the stairs, careful, not letting one bit ship off an edge. Every night it’s like this: the soft hands, the undershirt’s robe-swish, then weeks later she asks: Where do horses go when they say they can’t come back? I never thought there was a gift to be made of nothing, until I was a father and had to give it every day. I’m sorry. I don’t know, I say. Extra books at bedtime, extra songs, extra effort to tauten sheets to chin. Lamp off, forehead kiss, shut the door before The Gone come in, creaking floorboards, settling into her chair, soft they neigh into her ear, licking salt from her hands, cheeks, chin, sweet granules from the tangles of her hair. View from Eurydice’s Shoulder “In the first six months you child doesn’t know they are a separate person from you.” Every night after I tuck my daughter in she sings. Which means absence is an instrument she’s learning to play, the air between skin and skin the station where the self arrives lugging it’s duffels of sorrow; how the mind minds the gap until the mind becomes the gap. I too am learning—about sounds, the cavil of a latch locking into place, how silence is a type of touch, which means a type of burial, a face glimpsed in the dark, and then the dark, and then the dark.
