I feel like we’re in the middle of a natural disaster that will only devastate specific groups while other groups complain about how inconvenient the humidity is from the comfort of their lifeboats

If you have a job, now is the time to hold onto it. I help employees with severance agreements, noncompetes, etc., and there's been a huge uptick in people needing that kind of legal work over the past two months. I've signed waaaaay more clients than usual. The economy is bad.

Authors: If you found out that your publisher(s) failed to register with the U.S. Copyright Office, we can help. We provide ongoing legal assistance to our members and advocate for their work, particularly in the face of ongoing AI-related theft.
I am lightly horrified by how many people have now looked up their books and found out their publishers (who often were required contractually!!!!) just... didn't register the copyrights on books. Not all of them! Just sporadically!

This is not just one publisher, I've seen all the big ones now.
Today is the day authors are learning how many of their publishers straight up blew off registering copyright and I feel like that deserves a class action suit of its own if it costs everyone their settlement money from the Anthropic suit... 😒🤬

This is wrongful death. There is no legal reason for Open AI to avoid liability here.
Holy fucking shit

How do you know when a book idea is really good.

For me, it’s literally like a lightbulb goes when I hear certain words get combined. It’s not an image, but the words themselves.

What I find strange about writing and reading habits is that we've given up on the idea of variety. Readers (and publishers) are so focused on things that feel the same instead of things that feel new. This is accelerated by the push to chase virality and trends.

Ugh.

My doctor has requested more blood tests. My veins are really hoping this will be it, but finding final answers for my ongoing issues is taking forever.

If you could throw a few bucks my way, I'd be grateful. I'm at 95% of my goal. Thank you & please boost!

I think we underestimate how hard it is to write about complex topics when you know your manuscript is going to someone who may have no familiarity with that topic. How do I build this entire infrastructure for a novel when the reader has no foundation.

Apparently yesterday was #internationalsnakeday?

This seems like a perfect point to remind you of @meredithmooring.bsky.social 's REDSIGHT, a sapphic science fantasy brimming with blood magic, space-pirates, priestesses and, you guessed it, GIANT SNAKES.

I just found out that it's #WorldSnakeDay, so I *had* to pull a stack together real quick: some faves redolent with reptiles from deep space to my own backyard. I prefer a serpent to a rat, but I'm happiest when they're safe between the pages. How bout y'all? What are your favorite bookish snakes?

It’s weird to cancel Dostoyevsky in the year 2025. Most classics were written by flawed people. That doesn’t mean their work is without all value as a piece of literature.

I had to explain to my husband that writing does not have a “feedback cycle” like private industry does. He was like, what do you mean? Why is it so hard to get feedback? And I told him that the most common type of feedback is silence—you are more likely to be ignored than anything else.

What’s really hard for me understand is the assumption in this that our identities are a trend and you can just turn on a search filter to weed us out of book results.
I’m not attending Worldcon this year & everything seems to be a mess but this is so mind-bendingly bad on so many levels that I think it’s worth unpacking while I’m in the no-space of airports

I get very annoyed when other white people start talking about how we should flee the United States. This is our mess, and it's our job to fix it. No one is going to swoop in and stop him. It is OUR RESPONSIBILITY to change this.

I don't like the presumption in a lot of discussions right now that courts are somehow not a useful way to address problems. This post is just one example. Getting a judgment about who actually has authority is the right move. It means you don't have to put human beings in a position where they are
hey quick question: if this was an illegal order and the Governor of California is in charge of the state national guard until they're lawfully federalized, why is Gavin suing instead of ordering the guard to not follow Trump's illegal orders?
I'm filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration to end the illegal takeover of a CalGuard unit, which has escalated chaos and violence in LA.

Donald Trump's violation of the U.S. Constitution is an overstep of his authority.

We will not let this stand.

Where do you guys find artists for your projects? I’m trying to find someone for a novel that’s extremely moody and atmospheric, so a good landscape is a must, but I also need character work and animals. Nobody does landscapes, characters, and animals??? It’s usually one of these exclusively?
