Hey Bluesky folks! I'm one of the weirdos that imported like, 11 years worth of tweet into this account, so if you're scrolling back and see something that makes you go, "OMG, read the room, lady" it's my sincere hope that it's ancient history in spite of the date.
Had such a lovely author moment today at work when a woman came in with her late elementary age daughter so that the kiddo could tell me how much she loved my debut middle-grade novel and she was in the middle of the sequel. I had such a tough experience with those two books--it was SO nice to hear!

Thinking tonight about the moment years ago in a local mall when my youngest, upon passing Santa’s grotto with a line of kids waiting to take pictures, said loudly, “HEY MOM DID YOU KNOW IN THE OLDEN DAYS ST. NICHOLAS WOULD GIVE COINS TO WOMEN AT CHRISTMASTIME SO THEY WOULDN’T BE PROSTITUTES?”

Everyone involved in the publication and promotion of this book should be embarrassed. It's not a "harsh truth" that COVID mitigation was a mistake, it's ghoulish and false.

Shoutout to school librarians who are doing a hard job right now--this time of year, we have a lot of folks from out of town coming through the store and last weekend, a school librarian from Florida asked me about the state of book banning in MD. 1/3

If I could be allowed a mild tech geekout?

I was so honored to do a Scholastic Story Voice event this morning and share mine and @charlenedraws.bsky.social's "Things That Go Bump In The Day" with classrooms around the US. It was great fun! 🧵

This 8 year old FB memory came up this morning. Annoyed that Cheeto in Chief has been a figure in my children's lives for so long.

Had a great evening working for @curiousiguana.com— listening to @almakatsu.bsky.social and @jamieflanagan.com talk about horror, the differences between screen and novel writing and what they’re most enjoying in entertainment right now!

An indy bookseller speaks! Bookshop.org is AMAZING and frankly, without it, a lot of us would have struggled even more during lockdown. WAYYY better than Hive (if you’re picking the book up from a bookshop, why aren’t you ordering it directly from them in the first place??)

Some brief thoughts on the Anthropic settlement, and why I think most authors should claim their share of the settlement if they can, inadequate though I think it is:

Authors, Time to Get That (Anthropic) Bag
To begin, for those of you who do not follow such things with intense interest, a little context about the “AI” company Anthropic being sued for stealing authors’ works and reachi…

This should really go without saying but, DON'T LET YOUR KIDS PLAY WITH CHATGPT.
I spoke to parents who are letting their young kids play with generative AI and tried to sort through some of the questions they have about it.

"I don’t know what this is doing to their brains," one dad told me.

Meanwhile, Sam Altman says, "Kids love ChatGPT on voicemode."
‘My son genuinely believed it was real’: Parents are letting little kids play with AI. Are they wrong?
Some believe AI can spark their child’s imagination through personalized stories and generative images. Scientists are wary of its affect on creativity
