I work on early childhood policy, I complain about drivers, I share my kids' wit and whimsy, and in between I run a little. Living in Jersey City. Opinions are my own.
Several times this week, my cousin's poetry has taken my breath away

No, I did *not* get to see the Northern Lights last night, but I was up early enough to learn that my yard is THE place to be for raccoons in our neighborhood in the early hours, so I've got that going for me.

In a first for my time living in a city, I am checking our cameras to see who put something ON our porch (not taking).

Neither us or our neighbors know why we found a bag of persimmons on the porch yesterday.

And, credits aren't the only moving piece.

"Two federal policies that add enrollment paperwork and eliminate streamlined coverage renewals...[are] impacting 2026 rates. Insurers expect that these administrative burdens will depress enrollment of people who are healthier on average"

ACA premium credits expiring will fundamentally shift coverage & use among marketplace subscribers, and all of us.

Sticker price inc w/ no credit -> More healthy people opt-out due to price -> Remaining subscribers are "sicker", more expensive -> Those cost projections get added into the premiums

I will be thinking of the beautiful dedication in my cousins new book for a while.

Great piece on the FDA and menopause hormone therapy in @motherjones.com it is the most medically accurate coverage I have read from the press! www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
The many problems with the FDA’s big menopause announcement
No, it doesn't kill women or cause divorce.

Can anyone knowledge about the growth of sharing pronouns explain to me why the common format is "subject/object" pronouns ("she/her")? Why is the object pronoun even in there?

UPDATE: The Senate votes 53-47 to shoot down the Baldwin amendment to extend ACA funds for 1 year. A party-line vote with every Republican rejecting it.
An important vote in this series: Tammy Baldwin’s proposal to extend ACA expiring funds for 1 year. It’s structured as a motion to table (i.e. scrap it from the amendment tree). But it’ll show the appetite (or lack thereof) in the Senate to address this issue.

Shared @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social 's free bus idea with my 8yo who then remembered we recently took free busses to the public by @princeton.edu and now he's cooking up some ideas for Jersey City so watch out future candidates.

Pro tip: when listing your home for sale, always factor in the cost of last minute outings you'll take to accommodate showings when you set your list price!

How about we shut down the government for this very popular and specific goal and then, hear me out, we hold out for like a month and a half and then, ok this part is important, after a watershed election where we ran the table, ONLY THEN, fold and don't get the one thing we said we wanted.

Shoutout to all the parents out there running for or serving in office, trying to improve the world, because my 4yo just me unprompted that I should not be mayor because he would miss seeing me. Gone are all idle backbone candidacy ideas.

Fascinating and really helpful analysis.

"By keeping the case for herself and granting the same relief, in contrast, Justice Jackson was able to directly influence the timing in both the First Circuit and the Supreme Court, at least for now. "

JUST PAY THE MONEY THAT CONGRESS INTENDED, THAT CONSTITUENTS APPROVE OF, AND THAT MULTIPLE JUDGES HAVE TOLD YOU TO. JUST DO THAT.
NEW: Trump admin goes to SCOTUS to try and stop order that it pay full SNAP benefits this month

DOJ asks the justices for an order by 9:30 p.m. Friday — as USDA was in the middle of completing its process for making full payments, under a court order to finish Friday.

600+ people have viewed the community-made map of #foodaccess sites in #JerseyCity with eligibility & hours for listings.

HudCo must invest in updating resources beyond static lists with addresses & phone numbers. This is what people need.

Seeing that DATA - not vibes, not guess, not ideology - can still make a change for the good is the single most validating thing that I have seen lately as a policy researcher. Thankful for those at @centeronbudget.bsky.social who put their resources to analyze quickly and get this into the world!
Wow, huge credit to Katie and the rest of the nutrition team at @centeronbudget.bsky.social. USDA has now issued revised numbers because CBPP caught them either accidentally or intentionally making huge errors that would severely underfund SNAP, in direct violation of court orders.

Will be journeying today by transit from Jersey City to a South Jersey suburb - 3+ hrs, taking

NJT Bus to Newark Penn
NJT rail to Trenton
Camden light rail
Local NJT bus to final destination

Feeling very @milesintransit.com except as a fun bonus, I'll have two kids in tow.

Wish us luck!

Our home on Jersey City's west side is now for sale. 3 bed, 2 bath, some outdoor space. A legal driveway and also solar panels which balances things out nicely, environmentally.

We've loved it and hope it finds a great next owner.

We raised slightly more than the amount of benefits our applicants lost.

So basically, instead of waiting for government benefits that are unpredictable, our members got their benefits from their neighbors instead this month.

What an absolute joy to organize this and see our moms turn out!
I'm really proud that we're coordinating a financial response in my mom's group for members about to lose SNAP.

You need a large enough group that you can collect a decent money, yet a small or focused enough that their is strong TRUST- both for contributors & those seeking funds. #hunger

Trump admin warns states may have errors as they process the reduced benefits this month.

Worth noting under reconciliation: Beginning FY29, states pay into #SNAP, based on FY26 (that's now) error rate.

Concerned about the domino effect we may see.
