Gov't Oversight. MI/DC/VA/elsewhere. Here: Politics, Star Wars and other nerdery, DIY projects, bread, and occasional puns. Views expressed are my own. Mark Hamill mentioned me once on the beforetimes social media app.
CHAMBERLAIN: Can you rule out that Germany is going to take the Sudetenland by force?

HITLER: Sudetenland should be part of Germany. By what right do the Czechs assert control over Sudetenland?

C: So force is on the table?

H: Nobody is gonna fight Germany militarily over the future of Sudetenland
TAPPER: Can you rule out the US is going to take Greenland by force?

MILLER: Greenland should be part of the US. By what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? The US is the power of NATO

T: So force is on the table?

M: Nobody is gonna fight the US militarily over future of Greenland

I'd really like to see Democrats fight back against this by saying Republicans need to get over their Trump Taintlicking Syndrome.
TAPPER: What's your response to those who say Trump threatening military action in Mexico, possibly Cuba, possibly Colombia, possibly taking over Greenland, that none of that is America first?

SEN. BERNIE MORENO: Well, they have to get over their Trump derangement syndrome

Look, I know times are tough right now, but there are brighter days ahead. Imagine when JD Vance loses in 2028, Usha divorces him for being an unrepentant racist, and then writes a book called "Hillbilly Eulogy" about how terrible he is. We'll be eating GOOD then fam.
January 5, 2026 at 9:56 PM
Enough fucking around. NATO members (particularly the UK and France, with nuclear weapons) need to make it clear that if the United States goes after Greenland it will trigger immediate expulsion from NATO and invocation of Article 5 against the US.
Trump: "We need Greenland from a national security situation. It's so strategic. Right now, Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place. We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security. And Denmark is not gonna be able to do it ... the EU needs us to have it"

"Do what we want or else" foreign policy is basically Germany circa 1938
COTTON: If they don't want to follow in Maduro's footsteps, they need to start meeting our demands. And it's always an option for our military to protect American citizens and interests

BASH: And the interest is Venezuelan oil fields in this case?
January 4, 2026 at 3:55 PM
"You can't notify people in advance about an upcoming military strike because it endangers the mission" says the same admin that said it did not endanger the mission for the Secretary of Defense to send Signal messages describing a mission in Yemen.
RUBIO: "It's just not the kind of mission that you can pre-notify because it endangers the mission."

TRUMP: "If I can add one thing to that. Congress has a tendency to leak. This would not be good."

Honestly it's going to be incredibly funny when an NYC jury lets Maduro walk out of the courtroom after approximately 30 seconds of deliberation.
Vance pushes back and says this was not illegal, arguing "Maduro has multiple indictments in the United States for narcoterrorism. You don't get to avoid justice for drug trafficking in the United States because you live in a palace in Caracas."
January 3, 2026 at 3:20 PM
"It's legal for the president to launch an air strike to defend the US forces he illegally deployed to kidnap the leader of a foreign country."

I guess he at least hedges it with "likely"!
How does launching air strikes and a commando raid fall under the remit of self defense for an arrest operation
January 3, 2026 at 3:06 PM
I'd also really like to know how the DOJ plans to make a case to a US jury that Maduro possessing guns, etc, IN HIS OWN COUNTRY is a violation of US law that we can somehow enforce.
So for months they have tried to blame the entire fentanyl crisis on Venezuela and the indictment only mentions cocaine, which they pardoned a different guy for weeks ago

Why is it fat shaming to say he eats incredibly unhealthy? No one made any comment about his weight here, just that eating a big mac, quarter pounder, filet o fish, and fries in one sitting is bad for you!
this is fat shaming. please do better
Finally, Trump's diet! Oh my god. The piece closes with RNC Chair Joe Gruters saying he was "shocked" to witness Trump eat "french fries, a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburger, a Big Mac and a Filet-O-Fish" in one sitting (5/6)

@rianjohnson.bsky.social just Rickrolled everyone and no one noticed until now.
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Henry Ford was the son of an immigrant father and many of the nuclear scientists on the Manhattan Project (Enrico Fermi, Edward Teller, etc) were refugees from Italy and Germany. Stephen Miller continues to be an ignorant racist.
December 29, 2025 at 12:12 PM
This is the laziest of lazy straw men. No one is saying that the people sent to CECOT are necessarily people you'd want to have over to your house. There are a lot of people I wouldn't want in my house (Stephen and Katie Miller for instance)! That doesn't mean I want those people in torture prison.

The full paragraph is actually a rather stunning rebuke of executive authority. It basically says that in order for the President to deploy national guard for law enforcement, he must first have authorization from Congress or have martial law, and only THEN if the active duty military isn't enough.
December 23, 2025 at 8:38 PM
I mean, to be fair, the American people have repeatedly given Presidents wide discretion in this for the last ~25 years. Trump just figured out he could do whatever he wanted with it.
I hope it's clear to everyone by now that Trump's play over and over again is to yell "National Security!" and pretend as though that gives him the right to act like a dictator
December 23, 2025 at 2:16 PM
Look, I'm not a conspiracy theorist but if there were a letter Jeffrey Epstein sent like a day or two before he died (the postal stamp on it is "August 13, 2019"--3 days after he died) that directly implicated the president in pedophilia, I'd probably wonder whether said president had him killed.
DOJ briefly uploaded this letter from Jeff Epstein to serial child molester Larry Nassar:

"Our president shares our love of young, nubile girls. When a young beauty walked by he loved to 'grab snatch,' whereas we ended up snatching grub in the mess halls of the system."

I mean look all they have to do is tap Pete's Signal chats.
I’m sure Russia knows what we are going to do before the American people since they have so many people serving in the Trump admin sharing intel with them.

The funniest part is that "radical" isn't necessarily a derogatory term. It implies people who support significant social change, generally in a progressive way. There was an entire wing of the Republican party known as "radical Republicans" in the 1860s who wanted...equality for Black Americans.
Can we just pause to note how comically meaningless the reflexive Republican use of "radical" has become? Have they ever encountered a single Democrat too milquetoast and centrist to describe as "radical"?
If this doesn't motivate you to vote in the Midterms, nothing will.

I'm sorry, what
President Trump will announce on Monday a new type of large warship he is calling “battleships,” marking a step toward achieving the president’s vision for a new “Golden Fleet.”
Trump To Announce Navy Will Buy New ‘Battleship’
The new warship will be the latest in what the White House envisions as a “Golden Fleet.”

Sadly she will be fired for this and probably replaced with Olivia Nuzzi.
Per NY Times’s Michael Grynbaum on X, this is Sharyn Alfonsi’s email to her “60 Minutes” colleagues in full:
