Dad. Husband. Urban Planner @ITDP_HQ . Petworth DC. Pro-🚶🚲🚌. Tax the rich. Opinions my own. He/him.
Every day this happens. @wmatagm.bsky.social keeps saying bus service is good, but actually riding the bus is a much different, more frustrating experience.

Example for DC to follow?

Need to focus more on improving bus service, both at @wmata.com and at @ddotdc.bsky.social

It's not great and getting steadily worse.
For buses, I don't see it. Your own data says the percentage of planned bus trips that were actually delivered is at a 3 year low. Missed trips -> people standing around waiting for a no-show bus: late for work, school, appointments, etc. www.wmata.com/about/record... @wmatagm.bsky.social

Typical "progressive community" playbook:

Step 1: mandate luxury housing
Step 2: ban cheap housing
Step 3: express shock that housing is so expensive
Step 4: don't change anything
Zoning doesn't shape our buildings, it shapes our culture. When you can only build one big house per lot, you get only people who can afford one big house per lot.
A quirky Takoma Park needs quirky zoning

Progress on MET Branch Trail up to Maple St SW. Now paved, but not fully striped. Rideable but not officially open.

Looking nice, @ddotdc.bsky.social

Anyone know the story behind this one-block stretch of protected #bikedc lane on Mass Ave between NJ Ave NW & 2nd St NW? It's only on the north side of the street.

It's wild that DC still has minimum parking requirements. Toronto, SF, Austin, Minneapolis, Denver, Vancouver, both Portlands, and now Baltimore removed theirs.

Fascinating data & maps from NRDC. In DC,
67% of adults live in car-lite or car-free households
32% live in completely car-free households

This is entirely the result of density, transit, walkability, and bikeability.

What ADU densification it looks like. Homes over garages.
October 2, 2025 at 9:38 PM
ADUs can make a decent dent in housing production if done well. In LA they are now 1/3 of all new units.

@cmlewisgeorgew4.bsky.social why are protected bike lanes so scarce in Ward 4? How can I help move projects along faster?

It's a beautiful home, but today every alley home has to be a bespoke project, like this one. The way to get these built regularly is to make them legal to build without getting cumbersome zoning exceptions.

I think stadium subsidies are a horrible deal, and I agree that DC got screwed on this one, but it's hard to blame the council for making a deal that had +30 point support among voters. Someone has to convince the majority of people that these are a bad idea, and no one was successful at that task.

Every time someone say no one is using the bike lanes...
every month, it's this chart that blows me away. Ridership has doubled through July compared to just 3 years ago. DOUBLED!

National Guard soldiers called into service for President Trump's law enforcement surge in D.C. have been assigned to spread mulch at federal monuments.

Normally the Park Service does that, but the administration laid off the workers.

We have to decide which is more important. **Doing nothing** favors even more displacement, homelessness, and an increasing gap between the rich and the poor.
The housing shortage is a moral emergency - people lose their homes because they can't pay rent. NIMBYs think that's a price worth paying to keep apartments out of DC's wealthiest neighborhoods.

We think everyone deserves to live inside.
