Oh yeah everyone's attention span is awful. If you put out an extremely complex elaborate barely-tutorialised text-heavy role-playing immersive sim RPG they'll all just go on tiktok. Oh shit everyone played it for two million hours each. Uhhhhhhhhhh

We all saw that Netflix shit about the spaghetti and we all collectively groaned and I thought we all knew it was bullshit!

but I guess a lot of you were going "Ugh, what a shame Netflix are totally correct in their damning assessment of humanity. I wish they weren't right that everyone sucks!"

this is so cart-before-horse to me. i don't accept that people's attention spans are shorter in a way that has to matter. the problem is that we keep thinking that and "complying in advance" with the imagined boogieman of "people not paying attention nowadays". nothing done in that direction helps
You wanna know why we're having nag line discourse in 2025? Because developers know we're fighting an attention economy war we'll lose no matter what. Players don't read, have TikTok open next to them, god forbid we are scared you miss something and then blame us for not giving you all the info.

if you watch enough playtests you will find that everyone, no matter how attentive and video game literate, will sometimes fail to notice important things. and also some people are just beyond saving. and that's okay. you gotta let it go, man. you gotta let it go!

If you're making a game for the players who absolutely need extremely high-frequency nagging barks from an NPC, you're kind of making a game for no one *but* those players

oh y'all are talkin about overbearing ways to direct the player's attention again huh. well this stuff is all solved, the only relevant attention span is your own and that of your boss
People were talking about yellow paint in games again, and I got thoughts on that and the sorts of things you should do instead, so here's a blog post on that. Imo read my blog post and buy influx redux

Any God of War fans here?

What about a ruling for Boundless where your "companion" is represented by a dice Pool that shrinks as they help you or tackle their own challenges.

Tested this in a solo play session and it was so much fun.

I think people are unwilling to give the NYT and its staff the benefit of the doube because they [checks clipboard] have been able to observe and think about the NYT's behavior as an institution on virtually all issues for the last 20 years. Hope this helps
I was at NYT for 7 years & one of a dozen reporters who investigated Epstein’s interactions w/the rich & powerful. I don’t know every conversation held at every level there, but I do know we dedicated ourselves to exposing those who supported Epstein & engaged in the abuse of girls he facilitated

what obsession to canon and lore does to an mfer
James Bond’s death in No Time to Die is causing a nightmare for the next film. Writers are stuck because Bond “was blown to pieces.”

Anthony Horowitz, author of three 007 novels, says:

“You can't have him wake up in shower and saying it was all a dream."

I'm still scarred from when ER came out and someone wrote a whole thread about how the game was bad at "onboarding", how it needed a tutorial area you couldn't leave until you learned the basics.

And that the big tree sentinel at the start was "bad design" because it looked friendly but wasn't.
I'm watching a vid on Silksong and they're saying Dark Souls 1 had a 'bad' opening section (firelink) because, while there are multiple paths, there's only one you can fully pursue. Thus the others are 'fake' and it's a 'guess' as to whether you have a 'good' or 'awful' time...

Incredible that the messaging is "Lucy wants us to hit the football now :)" instead of "We decided to reopen the government to stop Trump from withholding SNAP/starving kids."

The latter is genuinely a good point, the former is a sign of dementia.
Shaheen: "We've heard from a number of our colleagues on the other side of the aisle that they're willing to come to the table, they're willing to work with us once the govt is open to get this done. We've heard the same thing from the White House. So now we'll see if they're really gonna work w/us"

sort of incredible to read a review that doesn't just made a vague nod at AI being bad, but actively reckons with the ways in which falling obsessively to AI usage actively obliterates the artistic intent and integrity of the work you've made.

Pros/cons for either option regarding the shutdown, but if they were going to open it for SNAP, Fed worker pay, etc..

They needed to lead with that and seize control, take credit for re-opening the government.

Now, it just looks like a surrender because Schumer couldn't control his caucus.
