I was SO pleased to see that there's more translation finally starting to emerge of writing by Maria Janion, one of the most fascinating and prolific figures of Polish scholarship and literature. A titan. Kudos to Marta Figlerowicz.

I feel like I post about this every year, but it would be useful if the media explained that it is not, in fact, easy to immigrate to this country, to get a national insurance number, to get indefinite leave to remain, to get citizenship. It is, in fact, already very difficult.

Modern languages has been under threat in British HE for some time — really not helped by the policy change, in 2004, when the requirement for all pupils to take a language to GCSE was dropped. Fewer GCSEs: fewer A levels: far fewer students who want study at degree level, even as a minor.

Starting here on a sad note, I'm afraid. Wicha's writing was about objects, design, art, history, people, politics; but also about loss, grief, holding on and moving on. I can't write about it as laconically and touchingly as he did, but I'm a more thoughtful human for having read his words.
Very sad to hear of the death of the Polish writer and designer Marcin Wicha. Wicha is the author of the prize-winning memoir 'Rzeczy, których nie wyrzuciłem', which we published, translated by Marta Dziurosz, as 'Things I Didn't Throw Out' - a team favourite, for its humour and poignancy.
