Important update was yesterday B.C.'s Human Rights Commissioner said the B.C. gov's approach to drug use has been a human rights violation. Here's to hoping CBC adds that into the story because it's kinda real big.

Also unofficial frostbite capital of the world. Record breaking EMS responses to opioid poisonings. What’s the wait for permanent supportive housing, non-market housing? Food bank access at all time high? Ban on tents so people die exposed to the elements while on lists for support access…
This time last year we learned that the homeless population was living in such dire circumstances they experienced rare lice infections were so bad they were transmitted to organ donation recipients. What did we do after that to respond to human beings in those conditions?
Yikes: A tuberculosis outbreak has been declared in inner-city Edmonton. 12 people have gotten sick this year. Two recently confirmed in October, suggesting it's spread.

If you spend any time in Edmonton with the folks who live on its streets, you'll see how the elites have condemned them to horrific situations, including the obvious possibility of disease.

“Government's obligation is to save lives, reduce harm and improve quality of life for those who have been marginalized, while working toward greater equity for everyone.”

Everyone should take a moment to read this statement from the BC’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner.

A human rights-based approach to the toxic drug crisis would require public policy that recognizes the full humanity of people who use unregulated drugs

which would be a whole new thing

More day shelter space is a start but we also need to activate the winter emergency response sooner, stop discharging people from facilities without proper clothes, and stop confiscating tents and other survival supplies.

Edmonton has had a disturbingly high number of frostbite amputations the last two winters. With freezing temps on the way, both the City and the Government of Alberta must do more to prevent people from freezing in the cold. edmontonjournal.com/opinion/colu... #ableg #yegcc
Opinion: Edmonton doesn't have to be the frostbite capital of the world
Severe frostbite injuries are entirely preventable - together, let’s work towards a city where no one gets left out in the cold.

DULF is a humanist organization that has saved lives. They did what the government has failed to do & regulated the drugs people were already using. That same government is charging them with crimes for not sitting idly by & watching more people die preventable deaths from an unregulated drug supply
Founders of Vancouver’s Drug User Liberation Front Eris Nyx and Jeremy Kalinin have just been found guilty of drug trafficking.

Justice Murray rules CDSA exemption didn’t include procurement & distribution.

“There is no doubt all of DULF’s actions were for one purpose.”

Street drugs have killed more than 18,600 BCers. DULF worked with cops, health authorities, feds to try and source, test and sell drugs with a known purity and potency to reduce overdose deaths.
Their strategy was saving lives.
Today they were found guilty of trafficking.

As we ready for the UCP's 2nd pre-emptice use of the notwithstanding clause in as many weeks, let's clarify what this means.

1️⃣ The move is constitutional. They *can* invoke it.
2️⃣ The UCP is not *required* to do this. There are other means to pass the law.
3️⃣ They should not use it, in my view.🧵

the DEA's decision to not ban kratom was a good one (would've exacerbated the OD crisis)

but an unregulated market will always produce dangerous products for consumers
Kratom drinks like “Feel Free” are being sold in gas stations and going viral on TikTok, but they’re not as harmless as they look.

Let's be clear about what happened today.

Premier Smith introduced a bill to strip Albertans of Charter rights,

denied MLAs the opportunity to debate it and the courts the ability to scrutinize it,

and did all of this from her seat on a jet to Saudi Arabia.
The UCP government has invoked time allocation and on a bill removing Albertans' Charter rights.

And they're using the notwithstanding clause to do it.

Here's why that is a dangerous precedent. And why real conservatives need to stand up against it.
