It is genuinely incredible to me how much evidence there is to support investing in the public good and how much animus there is to do this simple, effective thing.

It is very funny that this Pope is just going to get jerseys from now on. Everyone decided that's what this Pope likes and that is it. It's like if your grandmother got you a puzzle for Christmas one year and you said you liked it so your entire extended family is like "oh that's the puzzle kid"
Spike Lee just blessed Pope Leo with a custom Knicks jersey during his visit to the Vatican, just one week after the Pope was gifted a custom Chicago Bulls one.

a big runoff last night, in New Orleans:

Calvin Duncan was exonerated after spending *28 years* in prison; he tried to get his own case records from the New Orleans city clerk—but the office dragged its feet.

So Duncan ran to become city clerk himself, and yesterday ousted the incumbent.

Duncan, a political newcomer and former prisoner, defeated incumbent Darren Lombard by a wide margin in Saturday's runoff.

When I was placed on the Professor Watchlist in 2021, people sent death threats about my children. I had security officers monitor my 8yo at school.

Where is all the outrage for those of us who have been targeted for years? Where is the outrage for our families?

My own colleagues are silent.

A society becomes totalitarian when its structure becomes flagrantly artificial: that is, when its ruling class has lost its function but succeeds in clinging to power by force or fraud.

For the cynics who think it doesn’t matter, that the compensation for authors whose work was stolen will be so low it’s not worth fighting, I personally think it’s worth making the monetary punitive damage these companies suffer as big as possible to deter similar theft in the future.
A federal court ruled that ANTHROPIC illegally copied MILLIONS of books to train its AI.

All authors and publishers whose books were downloaded by Anthropic from pirate websites are subject to receiving compensation. This could involve your work.

I’ve seen this sort of sentiment pop up a few times this week, so just to mention: this happened because of Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, when reviews became not an argument but a numerical datapoint influencing the seemingly objective measure of a piece of art’s worth.
But here's what bothers me: On more than one occasion I've seen an artist suggest that a critic's job now is to basically be an extended arm of PR. And while sometimes the best thing we can do is be advocates for great art, that's far from true, and the implications are a little gross.

Absolutely fuck Air Canada, solidarity with everyone on strike, this is such an appalling state of affairs. I thought I had a working understanding of the grievances & demands but it’s so much worse than I thought.
Defying an order to end the strike, the union's president proclaimed:

"If we stick together, they can’t fire us all."

Here's what Air Canada flight attendants are fighting for:

Remember, kids! Hating on workers who want better working conditions is boot licking 101.

Flight attendants are literally not paid until the doors close on the plane. If you showed up to work at 9am but didn't start getting paid until 11am, you'd feel some kinda way, too.
People smugly saying "Why did you take the flight attendant job if you didn't like its terms?" reeks of "Kids these days just don't want to work anymore - in MY day we worked terrible jobs and didn't complain." So we're just...never supposed to fight for better? Is that it? Cool, thanks! 👍🏻

理良猫 by Girls

This was a fascinating find because this band apparently set one of the molds for josei bands in the 70s. Half of their album is Japanese while the other covers songs like Honky Tonk Women and Cherry Bomb.

It’s so hard to find them on streaming platforms…

This was an interesting find even if I can’t fully understand it. It did come with a handy book to at least get the gist of what both plays are about in English! It also came out of Lawrence HS…

Targeting “mail in” balloting will disenfranchise military members who are serving overseas and on naval vessels at sea. It will also disenfranchise the elderly who might have mobility issues in getting to the polls, not to mention those who might have no transportation resources at all.

As a former Texas State Rep, let me be clear: LOCKING Rep. Nicole Collier inside the chamber is beyond outrageous.

Forcing elected officials to sign “permission slips” & take police escorts to leave? That’s not procedure. That’s some old Jim Crow playbook.
