The Trump administration has gutted or scrapped multiple oversight offices within the Department of Homeland Security—meaning violent incidents will get less scrutiny, Caitlin Dickerson reports:
How ICE Lost Its Guardrails
The Minneapolis shooting will get less official scrutiny because of cuts by the Trump administration.

This song has been relevant since the day it was written. Never more so than now, and not just in the USA. youtu.be/gp5JCrSXkJY?...

I understand the pressures on the BBC, but Radio 4's coverage of the Minneapolis shooting is an example of "bad balance".

It's all "the Trump regime says she was a terrorist, but Democrats say it was murder".

The BBC has the footage. It doesn't have to treat truth and falsehood as equally valid.

The world feels rough right now

So please enjoy this shrimp, filmed off Cozumel, Mexico. It may be a larval reef shrimp, but we don’t know what species or how long it lives or what it eats. The world is still full of wonder and beauty and mystery.

I like the idea of surrounding this popular symbol of fertility with wildflowers and nature. Happy to chip in to make it so.
We've looked after the Cerne Abbas Giant and the small plot of land he calls home since 1920. Help us secure the surrounding land for generations to come.

Not commenting on Venezuela is one thing, but Starmer's ministers not even being willing to say "no of course the US shouldn't invade a peaceful sovereign democratic NATO country, which is one of our closest allies" is quite another.

Trump’s plan to open California’s coastline to oil drilling threatens more than ocean life
OPINION: The Trump administration plans to open the length of California’s coast to offshore oil and gas development, regardless of the law and the consequences.

Europeans didn't learn about electric eels until after they learned about electricity. There are electric catfish in the Nile, and they were called thunder fish.

Native S. American peoples called electric eels something that translates to: the fish that takes away movement.

'How like a winter hath my absence been
From thee, the pleasure of the fleeting year!
What freezings have I felt, what dark days seen,
What old December’s bareness everywhere!'

At 5.15pm GMT today, the Earth will be at perihelion, the closest point to the Sun in our annual round.

This should be the start of the year. Happy new orbit, everyone!

Our Solar System is orbiting the center of our Galaxy at about 220 km/s so in 2025 we collectively traveled something like 7 billion kilometers across the Milky Way. Once in a while, when you have a moment, it’s worthwhile to take a look around, see where you are, and appreciate how far you’ve come.

Stop.

Read the post below.

Do what it says.

Look at Earth - our home world - from the surface of Mars.

You are a terranaut on that fragile planet.

This moment brought to you courtesy of NASA Science.
Open up this picture fully.

Then look at the surface of Mars.

Then look up to the top right.

Spot Mars' moon Phobos high in the sky.

Then notice the bright spot beside Phobos.

That's Earth.
