@the-avocado.bsky.social this week is now at the Stakes miniseries in their ongoing Adventure Time recap.

I was one of 7 writers for it, and I used the episode “Empress Eyes” to talk about the show and how it’s close to anime. (1/2) the-avocado.org/2025/11/03/c...

There's been an influx of Japanese users to Bluesky recently for exactly this reason, especially when it comes to artists
Heartbreaking words from Dr. STONE mangaka Boichi, who decided to stop posting art on X because of the implementation of the GenAI Edit button

and who has been so distressed by its hostile, destructive purpose to destroy other artists' works that he hasn't been able to eat properly since Christmas😢

Got to show my partner Re: Cutie Honey for the first time last night.

I realize it's probably just a consequence of following the live action film (also excellent), but the decision to make Honey an adult really means they had total freedom to go big and loud without any tugging at the collar.

Man imagine if California made its wealthy people pay real, fair taxes and used some amount of that money to make art grants for tv shows on the level with the stuff Canada was doing in the 90’s. Everyone in the MPI would have a job again.
Billionaires are considering cutting or reducing their ties to California by the end of the year because of a proposed ballot measure that could tax the state’s wealthiest residents.
A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving
It’s uncertain whether the proposal will reach the statewide ballot in November, but some billionaires like Peter Thiel and Larry Page may be unwilling to take the risk.

great thread of networking advice! I was asked about this by a student at a college talk recently and I said a lot of the same stuff. it's about connecting with people and making friends rather than seeing them as rungs on your career ladder.
SO, you want to network but don't know where to begin.

1. DON'T. Make friends instead
2. It's not about what they can do for you
3. Famous people are just people first
4. If you do have to gush, don't just say 'i love your work' , pick one thing and say why. Open ended compliments are awkward

If you wanna celebrate Christmas by watching the new dub of an old ultraman project, turns out it’s on Tubi!
Got my copy of ULTRAMAN USA / THE ADVENTURE BEGINS from @millcreekent.bsky.social. You might notice I've been hyping this up regularly, because it's such a genuinely cool, weird OVA. But also... I'm in the new dub! Look for me as a fisherman, a newscaster, and an offscreen drill sergeant.

Since nobody's posted the whole thing onto YouTube in full HD before, I did so myself. If there's any version of The Nutcracker you should be watching today, it's this. Go in blind.

I’m pretty sure Americans are smart enough to realize that the Grinch is on par with Shrek and Snoopy in terms of recognizability through marketing and merchandise than some cartoon from the 1960s.
There were three guys walking around town dressed respectively as Father Christmas, Krampus and the Grinch, greeting children and wishing them merry Christmas

I can't help but imagine a US American guy seeing this and foolishly think "oh, Italians must really like the Chuck Jones cartoon"

Apparently Anaconda is getting mediocre reviews but don't you believe it, we all practically died laughing here. If you don't want a horror-comedy that's deeply and intentionally silly, I can't help you, but if you do want that it's AMAZING.

Merry Christmas Eve!

Remember that there are NO RULES TONIGHT!
If you feel weird about being festive when the world's like this, we wrote a book for you about celebrating Christmas under a dictator.

It wasn't a religious holiday in the days of curfew in Korea, it was an act of resistance.

Here's an antifascist Christmas carol from No Rules Tonight.

one of my faves as a kid
No matter what they tell you, there ARE scenes that are more striking when the character smokes.

Ghost of Christmas-Yet-To-Come Pete lighting up his cigar with the match he used to shed light on Scrooge's future gravestone in Mickey's Christmas Carol.

It truly wouldn't be the same without it.

Signed a petition; if Paramount wants to keep interest in the Avatar franchise, going theatrical is the way.

Animated TV series rarely go to the theaters anymore, let alone ones with so many fans. Please take advantage of this business people.

A commission of Perfuma and Scorpia from the She-RA show (which leaves Netflix next month) but as monster girls.

I have a story for this one, but I’ll take the time now to appreciate Danika’s quick responsiveness and artistry.

Thanks a bunch!

If you ever want to be mutuals with me, one of the quickest ways to do so is send me crossover promos like this, bonus points if it’s self-drawn like this and not stock art.

Love to collect stuff like this.

Essentially the case with ALL African-American folklore; if it’s connected to slavery, no one wants anything to do with it. It’s both the reason for existing and the causality of its un-popularity.

Here’s one I think deserves more attention. Giant women are cool:

My partner's been putting on some Robotech and there really is something special about having Claudia being played by a Black actress, Iona Morris is so good. Claudia's already a great character, and Noriko Ohara's original portrayal is stellar, but that extra bit of authenticity is a pleasure.

Sad but kind of expected given the current state of how animated TV series are treated now.

Can’t speak on my thoughts on Stugo since I’ve only seen 1 ep as of writing, but it did remind me of watching all these Disney Channel animated series from my youth that felt so “not Disney”, which was nice.

Gundam fans like to judge or make fun of folks who assume that the franchise is just a bunch of action scenes with giant robots, as if that isn’t what most peoples’ expectations are of the franchise, even in its home country.

Case in point, this recent tweet by Japanese wrestler Hikaru Shida: (1/2)

Specific animated series typically don’t get books like this dedicated to their history or themes, so I’m happy whenever one comes up now and then.
Excited to announce that my next book, I AM THE NIGHT, not only has a great cover but is available for pre-order now: us.macmillan.com/books/978125...
