I've always loved both Lucky Luke and Astérix. With the original authors now gone, I find Lucky Luke's approach of getting a new creator and letting him loose much more interesting than Astérix's, which is to mimic the original look and feel as much as possible. Bonhomme is doing a phenomenal job.

We need to let "cartoon references in Japanese (and other Asian) media" shine some more, because some of these are very unexpected and interesting given the source material, even if you don't look at the Westaboo-filled Studio Trigger. (1/2)
A scene from an episode of Kakegurui Twin where main character Yumeko Jabami is drawn like Star Butterfly from the Disney Channel/XD series Star VS the Forces of Evil. A page from the Shaman King manga. It is the character profile (number 28 to be exact) and introduction page for the characters Ponchi and Conchi, who themselves are meant to be homages to the titular characters of the 90s Nickelodeon series Ren & Stimpy. A scene from the 1st Asobi Asobase special OVA episode 1. The context is that when Hanako Honda's brother finds out Kasumi Nomura and Olivia are real, he tells her he thought her classmates were "[her] imaginary friends", an image of Blooregeard Q. Kazoo shows up (saying "Mac!" no less, to make it even less subtle). Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends FHFIF The bottom panel of the first page of chapter 58 of Shinmai Shimai no Futari Gohan / 新米姉妹のふたりごはん The main character Ayari Tsukishiro is looking at some furniture and silverware, while two girls walk down the street. They look an awful lot like Adora and Catra from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, the 2019 reboot of She-Ra: Princess of Power. To sell that its them, you can see Catra wearing a letterman's jacket with the Horde symbol on it.

This is such a shame because Thai spirits and folklore are so fascinating and underrepresented in western media. What an absolute waste of art and story. Animation continues to be decimated again and again. :C

my opinion on the Bad Bunny halftime show, and non-English music in general, is that i think a need to “be able to understand the lyrics” displays an embarrassing shallowness of the speaker to appreciate the voice as an instrument & to appreciate music as something other than a lyric delivery system

We’re still in Black History Month, so here’s something cool I recently discovered:

The Aunt Jemima brand has long been controversial for its use of a “mamie figure” and in 1972, an artist drew a painting of the character with more black power in mind.
A drawing of the original box for the Aunt Jemima brand of pancake mix circa 1960s. Notice the headband indicating the role of a housemaid. John Onye Lockard’s No More, for example, we see the figure of Aunt Jemima, anything but smiling, raising her fist in revolt as a Black Panther. Notes: This poster features a painting by the African-American artist Jon Onye Lockard (1932-2015), subverting the Aunt Jemima stereotype into an image of resistance. She is no longer smiling, her fist is raised in the Black Power salute, and the box warns "Open at your own risk!" The original painting is noted as "coming from the collection of attorney Gerald David White." No other examples traced in OCLC or at auction.

The United States version is now out, and I've made a review detailing some of the changes they made to appeal to us.
