This seems bad.
Exclusive: The U.S. Coast Guard will no longer classify the swastika, nooses and the Confederate flag as hate symbols.

The military service drafted a new policy that classifies them as “potentially divisive.”

Delighted to have a poem up this week in Psaltery & Lyre! Alt text for the photo appearing with the link: a close-up photo of a small wicker basket filled with a variety of wild mushrooms.

I got my first book club spam - purportedly from an Australian organization - last week. Because it wasn't the standard "book promoter" spam I read it through and did spend a minute wondering if it was a real thing but then I just deleted it.
🚨 ATTN Writers, Book Club Scams

For new writers: Money should always flow TOWARDS the writer. NEVER pay for promo.
I've been getting roughly one of these emails a week for the last month. I contacted the real club to give them the heads-up (who confirmed the obvious scam) so I feel I can share

Also, like, these people are just sitting there? Reading? That's like calling sports fans performative for attending matches.
Other than it is weird that people are just taking photos of strangers, is there something inherently wrong with being a "performative" reader?
Oh fuck off

Switzerland ended daylight savings time 2 weeks ago and the cats are still impatiently expecting 6pm dinner at 5pm.

This is completely bonkers. Also, I understand Switzerland has a much smaller population than the US & is logistically easier to manage. But. In the coming days my child will turn 18. A short time past said birthday there is an election. Said child has already received their voting materials.
🚨BREAKING: A civil rights organization sued the Trump administration Saturday over a new policy barring nonprofits from helping new U.S. citizens register to vote. The lawsuit calls the policy part of a “broader effort to ensure that new Americans cannot exert their democratic will on the nation.”

There are lit mags out there forbidding entire POVs? What are we doing?
Always astonished when I see a magazine that forbids submissions of second-person POV.

I'd much rather see third-person omniscient banned 🫠

I'm sending off a stack of work on paper, and since it's going to the US I pulled out a ream of 8 1/2 x 11 paper and wow, the size of 8 1/2 x 11 paper is oddly satisfying. It must be reaching some deep cultural touchstone lol

Teen Vogue rising after the 2016 election and dying after the 2024 election doesn't even feel like a metaphor as much as a microcosm of what is happening all over places that were once strong areas of resistance.

thank you for all the support; the statement from our union is now live here with some more reporting.

now that this is public I can confirm that the majority of today’s layoffs were women of color. there are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue.

Fuck, I knew they were coming for Teen Vogue.
I'm not in the least joking when I say Teen Vogue has been crushing it journalistically for years now. Bezos getting control over Teen Vogue would endanger a great source of information about bodies, sex, consent, reproductive rights & health, trans issues, and politics for a whole demographic.
Have just realized that the silly “Bezos wants to buy Vogue as a lavish wedding gift for his bride” story that’s been circulating is inaccurate - Bezos wants to buy Condé Nast which owns The New Yorker,Teen Vogue, Wired & Arts Technica because he is an oligarch who wants to crush all dissent.

My alma mater Pacific University where I attended @pacificmfa.bsky.social sent a fundraising request for food pantry programs serving the Pacific community in light of federal food aid ending Sat & I have never reached for my wallet faster. I've told this story for about 16 years. When my youngest was 1-3, he was overly adventurous. It never occurred to him that he couldn't do the things his older brother could do - climb ladders & trees & run fast down the street - and there were a lot of bumps and bang ups & some pediatric ER visits
