Just purchased a new eBike so I can ride to and from work. Considering there are multiple riding trails between the bottom of the hill and my workplace, I wish I had done this sooner, although the hill at the very end of a long workday was certainly a challenge

DID YOU KNOW that recorded history is surprisingly patchy before the year 1035? It is theorized that record-keeping improved significantly after the death of the King of England, Denmark and Norway (three crowns!) at the time.

Scholars refer to this phenomenon as post-Cnut clarity.

"Better act now!"

"Okay what is it?"

"Essentially a clumsy intern that lies a lot. Constantly. Persuasively. You have to triple-check literally everything they do. It's still a beta product, but it will improve."

"... uh okay so I guess you'll pay me to train it?"

"No, you pay us."
The loud drumbeat that companies should "embrace AI now or be left behind" has more in common with high-pressure sales techniques than biz strategy. And that's fine - tech firms have something to sell. But the rest of us needn’t confuse it with anything more profound. www.ft.com/content/4688...

I vote that if this guy doesn't shoot his own dick off he gets a lifetime ban, you can't be promising the people a good old fashion dick shooting and not follow through

Simple argument here: if this was happening you'd be able to point to a company that was actually doing it. You'd be able to point to the jobs and the ways in which they'd replaced them with AI and the ceo would talk about it openly. Is that really too much to ask? Yes. The answer is yes
BI published this a few days after canning 21% of its staff and reaffirming a commitment to go "all-in on AI." That's not mentioned in this story, unsurprisingly.
New data confirms it: AI is taking human jobs
Most people assume it will take years for AI to reshape the job landscape. But tasks that chatbots can do are already vanishing from job postings.

Whenever I see "AI ethics concerns" it's always crap like "should Claude have a social security number?!" and not "should OpenAI all be in jail for marketing ChatGPT like it's your friend and designing it to prioritize continuous engagement above all else?"
Oh yeah, Blake Lemoine basically got addicted to talking to the chatbot, personified it, then asked it a bunch of existential questions, to which it regurgitated mashups of 2001 and I, Robot.

2009's MMO addiction is going to look like peanuts compared to the wave of chatbot addiction that's coming.

As a "I clearly have headphones in, why are you talking to me?" person I have to know; why are extroverts rights to talk to people more important the my rights to not have to talk to you? What makes people like this think that whatever they have to say is so important that I MUST engage with it?
Unpopular opinion: I know it's cool to wear your earbuds and carry a book while pasting a disinterested, don't-talk-to-me expression on your face, but I like to talk to the person sitting beside me on airplanes. I liked it when we were willing to be inconvenienced by strangers.

Empathetic? Listen, the way the media treats white male criminals is something that needs discussion, but Luigi Mangione hasn't been given "empathetic media coverage", I mean there is a mass outrage from the media about how empathetic non-media people are being towards him.

How does this kinda shit keep happening to prominent people and they just brush it off as "well, ChatGPT told me this made up info."

Yeah, and you're a journalist. Why would you ever report on something ChatGPT told you without checking if it actually happened?

Newsletter: We're at peak AI - generative AI models have hit the wall where they won’t improve much further thanks to a lack of training data, killer apps or any kind of sustainable business model.

The results of a collapse could be catastrophic.
