Union Starbucks baristas voted to authorize the strike by 92%.

Now baristas in over 25 cities could launch an unfair labor practice strike on Thursday, November 13th.

I know this man does not care (and maybe enjoys toying with folks on SNAP) but parents are trying to figure out how they are going to feed their kids. The level of stress and anxiety every time some confusing new report comes out is its own form of cruelty.

They are bringing back the poorhouse.
Under Trump, the draconian future of homelessness policy is coming into focus: mass internment. Utah is building a 16-acre site to detain up to 1,300 homeless people inside locked "accountability centers." This is profoundly alarming.

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

The magnitude of 42 million people losing SNAP all at once is hard to fathom.

SNAP, the country's largest anti-hunger program, dates back to the Great Depression and has never been disrupted this way. Most recipients are seniors, families with kids, and those with disabilities.

As a person who twice barely avoided getting kidnapped and sent to conversion therapy by my own family members it is very disheartening to hear that conversion therapy is still being discussed. Last i checked the only thing it converts is living kids to dead ones.

Literally welfare reform for public housing. Clinton opened this pandora's box in 1996 and this was always where it was headed - start with cash assistance and then use work requirements and time limits to gut every inch of the safety net.

Read this whole thread. The EO is a huge regressive step. And Brian's not wrong to be worried about this point in particular. The major theme of Trump II social policy is old-style Poor Law thinking, down to the indoor versus outdoor relief distinction.
It's not at all alarmist to expect that the new network of detention centers will be used to confine unhoused people—and to extract free labor from them. Everything in this executive order points in that direction.

That environmental destruction is actually conservation.

This must-read essay traces how productivism – the obsession with yield – fuels ecocide & colonialism, while failing to 'feed the world'.

if any other country suddenly moved to expel half a million - HALF A MILLION - nonwhite immigrants, reporters would call that a crime against humanity. forced transfer of population falls under that designation; it's also one of the defining aspects of genocide. i'm incandescently angry over this.

Withdrawing the incredibly successful pandemic social welfare programs is one of the less talked about facets of our descent into overt fascism.
During the pandemic, the US implemented the most effective social welfare policies in our history -- programs that worked because they were big enough, simple, and universal. And then we withdrew them. This remains imo the central economic-policy story of our times. davisvanguard.org/2025/05/3hou...

There is no need for Medicaid work requirements because almost everyone who can work is working.
What we are getting instead is Medicaid work *reporting* requirements, where people lose coverage because of administrative burdens.

They are running the welfare reform playbook on SNAP - pushing funding onto the states adding work requirements. SNAP has become the safety net of last resort over the last 25 years and now they are shredding it while cutting $ for food banks. They are legislating hunger.
