And then they’re laughing again. Ed slouches in the chair and tips his head against the back of the couch, presses the heels of his hands against the corners of his eyes where some moisture has gathered from all the giggles. Settling into the soft couch (and ever aware of the closeness of Stede against his side), Ed realizes he’s exhausted, feeling a bit wrung out. Even though he’d only listed the facts about his knee. Didn’t even get into the perpetual scratchless itch of it all, the failure of any other cardio to deliver the mental oblivion of a good run. Or the betrayal there, of a body that’s no longer reliable, that disintegrates into a shoe box of malfunctioning parts at the slightest break from routine—too many missed PT home exercise sessions or one over-enthusiastic workout. Ed wonders now if Stede can sense the self-pity, the shit-wallowing that must be emanating from him at this very moment. But Stede’s just a steady pressure there. And Ed’s realizing now that abandoning his little chair island to join Stede on the couch was a dangerous move. ‘Cause, yeah, he wants to kiss him, but he also just wants to curl up there and lean on him. Enthusiastically. Aggressively. Like one of Fang’s overgrown lap dogs. Flop right across his legs so Stede can never stand up again. He can feel Stede’s body pressed up next to him and he still wants to be closer. He’s got to say something before he goes and does something he shouldn’t.

Ed watched him go with a raised eyebrow, the man picking up his brandy and taking it to sit outside despite the fact it was a fairly chilly evening and he was in only a threadbare cotton shirt and shorts. Ed personally couldn’t see how his evening was going to be any different than normal; he was actually considering going home shortly. Maybe he’d watch some TV and get an early night rather than sit alone at the bar like he did every Friday. But then. An angel walked in. Well. Maybe not a literal angel but he certainly appeared angelic to Ed. In fact, choral music was going off in his head right now, along with some kind of magical spotlight on the guy. Might also just be the dodgy lamp in Jackie’s that flickers a little.

Tonight’s goal? To flirt with Stede, with intent. Ed’s nervous, of course. He has hope, which feels weird; his tummy is all squirmy about it. Nothing has worked out for him through the age of forty-eight, so why should it start now? Something about Stede feels different, though. Deep in Ed’s gut, he can’t shake the feeling that he and Stede are meant to be something, despite the short time they’ve been acquainted. It’s a silly thought, but it feels like they’re fated. No one Ed’s ever met before has felt like such an easy, immediate fit, like there was a place just waiting for Stede. With Stede, Ed feels comfortable with himself, like all his history has brought him to the exact right moment and exact right person. Even if this feeling is not written into Ed’s skin, it is somehow already written into his heart. That has to count for more, right? Before he leaves the room, Ed applies some cherry Chapstick. He’s choosing hope, for once in his sorry life.

Ed nods emphatically, so Stede gently removes his finger, slicks up a second, and eases them both in. Fuck, Stede's actually amazing at this. He's laser focused: every time Ed opens his eyes and looks at him, Stede's observing him closely. His lips are parted and he's breathing heavily, but it's so obvious that Ed's comfort and pleasure are his top priorities.
