This is appalling. What will they take from refugees with no jewellery or possessions to seize to cover their costs - hair, gold fillings...organs? Who could vote for this pretty good imitation of a far right party?
This argument that we need to adopt fascism-lite to prevent electing fascists is a big ahistorical lie, and it has a lot of currency in Canada too. This will not solve any problems fascists blame on refugees, while it concedes the idea that they're correct to blame them. This is how you get ICE.
UK set to limit refugees to temporary stays
Shabana Mahmood is expected to say the era of permanent protection for refugees is over, in major changes to the UK's asylum and immigration system.

I date this paralysis back to the Smith Commission and the Vow - after the No vote, we expected attempts to reform the union as promised, but they never came and the promises were broken. It all went back to party politics, and stuck there in a horribly negative and party-political tit for tat.

Scotland produces more than its fair share of renewable energy...we don't want or need nuclear power in our country. Put the investment into rival power which is available 365 days a year and in abundance round this island.

Blackcaps – until recently fleeting summer visitors to Britain – have done especially well out of it."
The dark side of bird feeders: what they don’t tell you
Feeding garden birds brings pleasure to millions of people in the UK. And we’re doing good. Or are we?

Government should not be a popularity contest. Decisions should be made based on benefit for/needs of the country. Media has a role to play in shaping a grown up narrative but fails so often.
Don't think there's any doubt it would have been incredibly unpopular.

The relevant questions are a) will the tax rises they do instead be more or less unpopular and b) would it allow them to do things that made them look more competent in three years' time.
Quite a contrast to the BlueSky consensus the last 24 hours

I hoped over time, we'd stop having everything in Scotland framed by indyref but neither side can let go. I guess Yes feel they are winning so want to keep pushing and No see support falling so keep re-making their case. All tedious and unproductive.
Even when Scotland is praised on the world stage the SNP gets no credit

Financial agencies applaud Scotland’s economy, but all we get is sneering. Govts need held to account but credit where credit is due

It shows how meaningless the quality of our debate has become

Trump says he'll direct att gen to investigate Epstein's involvement with Bill Clinton, Democratic donors & banks @theguardian.com

A clear demo of what matters to these people is politics & power, not the victims. If Clinton, donors or banks involved, it should be made public. #DrainTheSwamp

In the UK, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's friendship with Epstein has led to total disgrace.

He's been stripped of his titles, reduced to the status of a pariah.

Nobody is defending him.

He's a TOTAL disgrace.

In America, Jeffrey Epstein's close mate, Donald Trump, remains the president.

Insane.

Yes, it’s rape as those under the statutory age of consent are generally not able to provide legal consent to sexual intercourse with adults.

Trumpublicans seem to lack respect for the laws of the land — including those related to statutory rape — and it keeps showing in more and more ways.

Keir Starmer's spokesman says he spoke to his senior team today and "has been assured that no No. 10 staff briefed against ministers."

Asked why he apologised to Wes Streeting if he believes his staff didn't brief against him, he replies that he "apologised for the situation he found himself in"

It’s pitiful to watch Labour cynically toy with ideas, hoping to win support, which should have come naturally to the government in its first days: like repealing the two-child benefit cap. It’s too late. If Labour’s guiding mission isn’t eradicating child poverty then what’s the point of the party?

I live in Wester Ross - we don't have local buses so bus pass is not much use for day to day when have to rely on our own car. Those who don't drive use our excellent vol car scheme where possible but it's not free. So, yes extend free bus travel but please extend bus coverage in rural areas too.
🗣️ Today @ScottishGreens.org will lead a debate in Parliament setting out that the upcoming budget gives Scotland the chance to expand free bus travel to even more people.

💚 Lower climate emissions, lower pollution, less congestion, better mobility, and more money in your pocket.
