If a student you know received an honorable mention for the NSF GRFP, encourage them to contact their Congressional representatives! 🧪
Honorable mention here — they said this in the email:

“Although the agency is unable to offer fellowship support at this time, a subsequent announcement of additional awardees is possible subject to finalization of the agency's fiscal year 2025 spend plan”

NIH funding is frozen. @annikabarber.bsky.social is keeping score: 50%+ of study sections planned for this year (77/148) have been cancelled.

I talked to Dr. Barber about why these delays are disastrous, and why scientists should be pooling info and speaking up: www.chronicle.com/article/nih-...
NIH Funding Is at a Standstill. This Professor Is Tracking the Delays.
More than half of the NIH grant-review meetings that were supposed to take place this year have been cancelled, she says. “Without these meetings happening, nothing can get funded.”

This is absolutely correct. Convo I had last week that is part of why I resigned:

Much more senior leader: no, we still can't post FRNs.

Me: Doesn't that mean we can't proceed?

MMSL: correct

Me: doesn't that mean we're not in compliance with the TROs?

MMSL: ...um...yea, in a way...
The updated guidance says that all NIH scientists can resume serving as peer reviewers for journals “and on study sections for grant applications” — only the study sections can’t happen without opening the Federal Register. (Unless they were previously scheduled.)

Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

To quote @denisduboule.bsky.social , IMHO one of the best definition of curiosity-driven basic research & serendipity

"going off to look for mushrooms and coming back with blueberries. If you are payed to find the mushrooms, you won't come back with the blueberries. You will come back with nothing.
I’ve seen some posts recently, about the value of basic research, in light of funding cuts and demands that research have immediate economic justification.

Let me collect some info here, in a thread, about why it’s a bad idea to attach those sorts of demands to funding. 🧵 🧪 ⚛️
