Truly fed up of people saying that the way to prevent a huge drift to the far-right is to keep Labour in govt. Their migration polices ARE far-right populist and make way for worse. Trad politics are done. Lab/Tories are done. The next election will not be fought how we've experienced them to date.

The truth politics dare not speak. Part of the reason this is unsolvable for Lab is that it isn’t a real issue - it’s a euphemism for political discontent.

They could get immigration to zero, destroying the country in the process & it wouldn’t help, cause it’s not what ppl are actually angry about
One of the things that the “immigration debate” in the UK really reveals is how little people actually know about how other people live. So much of immigration policy fails to work, even on its own terms, because it’s trying to solve problems that mostly exist in peoples heads

Thinking about this as we await an "announcement" by the end of the week. The headline omits that, like my partner, some of those quoted would have been eligible for citizenship by the end of this Parliament, were it not for Labour's policy of extending ILR residence requirement retroactively.

Labour is in power — they can set the agenda — but they’ve chosen to let others set it. On X, the new target set by the far right is “legal” migration (no one is illegal, by the way), and now we’re in a situation where we can predict and fear in advance what’s coming.

European political scientists are blue in the face from constantly pointing out that accommodating the far right does not help centre-left parties win, and contributes to the rise of far-right parties. There's a mountain of data to support that.

But no, the galaxy-brained strategists must be right.

Most asylum seekers arrive with their valuables long lost in bombed or abandoned homes, stolen, or sold to afford the dangerous clandestine passage to safety

The real thing of value to be snatched from refugees under these proposals is far more painful: their families & futures

Mahmood trialing Blue Labour / Reform messaging on immigration and asylum-seeking is repellent.
“A vote for Labour is the only way to stop Reform”

Or

“Labour can actually do what Reform only claims it can do”

The government needs to pick one strategy, not both. The government seems unaware that voters can actually hear it trying both messages at once.

Sheer cruelty on display in the Home Secretary's proposed new asylum laws, which could see refugee families with children suddenly uprooted and deported after spending years rebuilding their lives in Britain. Shameful capitulation to Reform's agenda at the expense of the most vulnerable.
