Good morning to readers; Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

Russian captivity was hell for Oleksii - painfully dark and cold.

For him, Ukraine's power cuts aren't just uncomfortable, they are worsening his PTSD and triggering flashbacks from the worst days of his life.
Why cold, darkness worsen PTSD among ex-POWs
We explore the tragic, unusual link between cold and post traumatic stress. Amid blackouts, former POWs face a surge in flashbacks. Oleksii is waking up from nightmares for the first time in years.

I am really angry about all of the scientists who cozied up to Epstein even after it was known who he was.

I am nearly as angry at how many people are justifying this as "they had to, it's how academia works"

NO IT FUCKING WELL ISN'T
You don't have to dirty your soul to be a successful academic or a scientist. Have some fucking pride. Have some fucking principles.

If you think you DO need to do that, all I can say is that I beg you not to go into academia or science.

🔴 Update: DTEK, Ukraine's biggest private energy provider, has revealed that at least 15 of its workers were killed in the attack, a large-scale operation targeting DTEK mines in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

The service bus was transporting miners back home after their shift.
🔴 Russia attacked a service bus in Pavlohrad, Dnipropetrovsk region, with a drone that killed 12 people and injured a further seven, who were hospitalised.

For context: despite the proximity of the frontline in the region, workers still commute daily to and from industrial sites or mines.

Cursed exchange between someone working for Epstein and Steven Pinker. Note that it happened in 2012, after Epstein's 2008 sentencing. Pinker said he'd be "delighted to meet with him."

It's easy to see these men as individual bad apples. But I'd argue--they were enabled by "elite" universities' look-the-other-way approach to dealing with big-name bad actors, and by the fact that, societially, we treat people associated with "elite" schools as automatically deserving of deference.
It's disturbing to see many of the the major figures in moral cognition all over the Epstein files

He was friendly with a huge number of the leading figures in the field, including giving millions to their labs, long after he pled guilty to sexually abusing young girls

I'm really not able to process the depth of what PBPD had on him in 2005-2006, and how it all just went away.

I've been a licensed attorney for 29 years. I tried more cases than I can count-- huge cases, bet the company cases.

I've never read anything so airtight as this, and it's fucking shameful
I found the first investigative file from the first complainant against Epstein in 2005.

There are descriptions from the officer, over several interviews of the girl, of her pulling her knees up on the chair, drawing doodles, & the officer high-fiving her to keep her calm as she speaks of horror.

For months, DOJ has been sandbagging the Epstein release claiming they were redacting sensitive information and using it as an excuse to delay other document productions, but they just released the files with apparently "thousands" of instances of victim's names and identifying details unredacted.
