I've been thinking a lot about the difference between doing a "search" and doing "research" and how that works with conspiracy theory/lies to control our public sphere. Here's an old thread from 2023

I'd really recommend listening to this episode of Posting Through It with J M Berger, explaining extremism in terms of In groups and Out groups. It has a very clear application to the current situation in the US, with very serious implications for democracy in the US

This kind of Party rhetoric full of creepy blood&soil undertones has been around for years. It's just harder for non-Sinophones to pick up on due to the language barrier.

Here's a post that breaks down & analyzes that rhetoric (in its original Chinese) word by word:
Never Forget Chinese Nationalism’s Ethnocentrism
Saying that Chinese increasingly assertive nationalism has a rather ethnocentric streak is nothing new, at least not for those who follow China. However, only when you actually read the source materia...

Here is my best guidance for action, rendered beautifully by the great John Lithgow. I first published these lessons more than eight years ago, in late 2016. They open the twenty chapters of "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century."

Good NYT article. While most analysts focus on the things China can do to boost consumption by enough that it can begin to lead economic growth, Bradsher again focuses on why this is easier said than done.

The funniest folk etymology is for Macau, said to be "what the f*" (mat1 gau1 乜尻) in Cantonese.
The Portuguese asked a local "what place is this?"
The local went: "Nei 5 ngap1 mat1 gau1" 你噏乜尻? ("wtf are you saying?"),
so the Portuguese thought Mat1 gau1 was the name 🤣 1/2

Whatever one might think individually of Sheinbaum, Trudeau and Zelensky, it is clear that America has failed to learn the lesson of the last two centuries: imperial aggression rallies the subaltern to the flag.

worth remembering that there is not *one* plan. musk, vought, trump, congressional republicans are all working towards different goals, some of these are compatible, many of them are not, but because trump is weak and disinterested in his own admin, everyone's pulling in different directions
have come around to the idea that the plan, insofar as there even is a plan, is a permanently weakened federal government, with an assumption that this will increase corporate profits and power. i think that's a very bad assumption, but i can't make heads or tails of it otherwise.
lmao what are these lunatics doing?!

I mean, ffs, this is just raw, unhinged insanity. Its not starve the beast w/e. It's a ketamine addled rampage through the American economy.

There is no "strong America" on the other side! It's a flaming wreck! What are we doing!

The main problem with Clausewitz is that people won't read the book. As @bafriedman.bsky.social aptly writes: "Clausewitz is cited in strategic studies; not read."

This applies to military doctrine and professional military education, too.

“On War holds a unique place in strategic studies because it’s not about strategy, it’s about defining war as a social phenomenon. It’s the part that nearly every other theorist just skips and moves right onto Violence + Reason = Victory.” A superb essay.

Military #doctrine is not a substitute for the theory.

If you want to discuss Clausewitz (and you should), please read Clausewitz. Particularly in #PME

PS: I love doctrine, and US Marine Corps Warfighting (MCDP 1) is a prime example of a beautifully written doctrine.
