Rick Steves 🤩

"Steves called the purchase the best $2.25 million he could imagine spending."

But he's also correct in saying that "private donations are also not a substitute for public investment — and shouldn't determine whether essential services survive."

Bilingual brains, part 4,590.

A French speaker asked for help finding an "adresse" (of an agency).

The seldom-spoken but oft-read Basque "bulego" (office) raced to top of mind, crashed into +French and came out as "bulot". Oops! So close yet so far.

Luckily, the next mention came out as "bureau".

But let's turn that around: Anyone who wants to call what they are doing "AI" should be accountable for making clear why their product (or research) isn't in fact slop. That's on them. The rest of us do not need to hold space for that.

Time to release my Herd About Buffalo, a lovely public art initiative from 2000.

The book has accompanied me across a continent (from Buffalo to Seattle) and an ocean (Seattle to Donostia). 💙

UPDATE from Pentagon's "bespoke AI platform" rollout.

“We are pushing all of our chips in on artificial intelligence as a fighting force. The Department is tapping into America's commercial genius, and we’re embedding generative AI into our daily battle rhythm" -- Hegseth
NVIDIA, whose stock is now a "load-bearing entity in the US stock market," "is dependent not on its customers, but on its customers’ credit ratings and financial backers." And it gets worse from there!

This is a pretty great project, and it’s nice to see in my timeline at the time of year when I most think about (and sorta miss) living in Buffalo/Western New York.
Announcing the debut of the Chicken Wings in Buffalo Timeline, something I started years ago & wasn't able to finish until I retired. Over 100 events, 1855-present.

Revising your own academic texts requires lots of juggling and sifting through of layers, perspectives and choices. No wonder results can be uneven and less than satisfying.

In January I'm running a mini-course that helps you build a strategic approach to managing the task, adapted to your needs. 👇

Very cool that my home NPR station is doing this. I must stream from Spain more often so I can hear it.
So this is cool: my local NPR station, @kuow.org is broadcasting their station identification in different languages. The first one I caught was Lushootseed, and so at first I thought it was an acknowledgment of the people whose land KUOW is located on. It is that, but also more:
