Ooh, this is exciting (for me). After the UK general election last year, editors anticipated years of changing ‘Kier’ to ‘Keir’ (Starmer, our prime minister). I don’t often work on texts that need to mention current politics, but I’ve just found my first Kier 🎉

I’m proofreading an article that mentions Roman legionaries. I stopped briefly to look at something my brother sent – he works in legionella testing.

Now my poor brain thinks these Romans are misspelled – that was not a helpful juxtaposition, as it turns out 😂

Another piece on storytelling, my unplanned theme for today.
This is thought provoking. The failure of the left is the failure to tell stories about how integration, migration and diversity have delivered benefits for this country.

Farage's scare stories of fear and hatred can't be countered by facts and figures.

This article is largely preaching to the converted, so Monbiot omits the basic problem that makes climate denial propaganda so powerful. For a long time, this was an invisible crisis that required the public to understand scientific theory. Deniers used emotional language first, and used it better.
Climate breakdown is driven by a storm of lies. This lying is systemic, funded and coordinated, and operates across almost all media, old and new.
This week's column argues that we cannot fight the climate crisis without also fighting the epistemic crisis.

Dark forces are preventing us fighting the climate crisis – by taking knowledge hostage | George Monbiot
The fundamental problem is this: that most of the means of communication are owned or influenced by the very rich, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Interesting idea – I'd love to see this happen.

I find it frustrating that nothing I do can make anywhere near as much difference as those private jets, for example. So I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be to have understood the gravity of climate change in the 1960s and had to watch those with power behave as they have.

I'm still getting used to the idea that I work on the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology, and now there's an editorial with my name on it 😮

How do you work out which generative AI is best for your needs?
As AIs get smarter & more useful, our benchmarks become less useful. Measuring general knowledge or coding ability gives us only a glimpse into what an AI model can do.

Anyone who wants to use AI seriously for real work will need to assess it themselves. www.oneusefulthing.org/p/giving-you...

As AI advice becomes more important, we are going to need to get better at assessing it

I've just received the CPD certificate for Small Business Britain's Green Growth Programme, so I've been looking back over my notes from the classes.

It was inspiring to learn from other service providers about ways of cutting costs and attracting customers while doing good. Thank you all.

I started this in January. Finally, I declare construction complete 🎉

It’s very wobbly but I managed to make space for it on a bookshelf. Hooray!

Just finished Philippa Gregory’s ‘Boleyn Traitor’. Stunning read, as ever. All the usual great writing that creates tension and suspense even when you know the outcome, with timely comment on tyranny and cruelty.

It's been another big month, including my first time volunteering at Wimbledon BookFest, which I loved.

I also worked on a variety of books and finished a CPD course with Small Business Britain.

November contains a history book and more CPD. I'm looking forward to it!

I’m volunteering at @wimbookfest.bsky.social this year. I’ve done my first two shifts this weekend and had huge fun, and discovered that it takes a lot of work to start an event half an hour after the previous one ended.

And that having a roving microphone is fun but also kind of scary!

Many thanks to @lisarandisi.bsky.social for a wonderful day at the Petrie Museum in London. First, a handling session, looking at ephemera – eg newspaper used to wrap an item during excavation.

Then I worked in the university library for a few hours. Then more ephemera this evening.
