Mashups in genre fiction do not inherently create sanitization. Western movies without the supernatural elements have sanitized concepts of colonization and genocide, as well the vast majority of non-white cowboys. Meanwhile asserting games like....
I love the genre mashup. Give me all the Golden Girls/Cthulhus and WWII/Draculas you've got.
But I'm also looking for non-mashups. Sometimes it feels like the industry has an allergy. Westerns without magic. Drama without aliens. Detectives without Cthulhu.

There is one more reason I'd like to add to the discussion: the heightened atmosphere of mashups is often there to ease fears of 'roleplaying out of tune'. It takes the imaginative pressure off, so to say.

On a related note: if you're playing a game that's in a specific genre or is built on a particular trope...for the love of GOD play into it! I know it's fun to subvert tropes but like...it's so hard to play a game when people just want to reject the premise of the actual game.
It's on the player to figure out why they want to stick around!

Why am I so against generative AI in games?
