Wow, quite a weather warning from NWS Seattle for Christmas Eve.

"Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles."

On an average day in Texas, 11 people are killed due to traffic violence.
Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian, Australian, or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.

"A TIME FOR QUIET REFLECTION": readers tell us the good, bad, and ugly of winter solstice. Is it merely the darkest day of the year, or a sign of something more dysfunctional?

Ferries are a car and sprawl subsidy 😀
Governor Bob Ferguson has proposed using the state's debt capacity to pay for new ferries, along with maintenance and preservation on the existing boats. Debt service is already 12% of the state transportation budget, more than WSF's entire budget, and 149% of the state public transit budget.

Facebook Commenter: "Drunk driving is fine. It's the drunk crashing that is the real problem that the government should address."
Wait am I supposed to weigh in on whether drunk driving is good or not

I've said this before and I'll say it again; efficiency can be important in transportation, but it is not everything. When we need them, we should be able to choose ways of movement that emphasize ease, our sensory experiences, our connections to other human beings. It can be such a balm.
Opinion: Slow Transportation Should Be a Human Right — Streetsblog USA
American culture, and particularly American transportation culture, is profoundly rooted in the idea that traveling fast is best — because if we don't, that culture insists, we won't be able to make o...

The AI Kalshi ads make want to live in dark, mysterious woods and write long manifestos about the fall of mankind. Abhorrent.

Thinking about a guy's long rant on a random Instagram page about how Seattle's signal timing is bad and causes traffic, and Seattle should emulate Los Angeles' much better signal timing. To which I wanted to reply: so your big pitch is that you want to make Seattle traffic more like Los Angeles?

This is an absolutely incredible piece of reporting that rightfully identifies the cultural barriers to safer streets. The Facebook comment quoted in the article is a remarkable commonplace sentiment. You cannot design culture away.

What a lede on this story: Man who complained about narrowing a road in order to protect pedestrians, so much that the city eventually reversed the change, then kills a woman on that very road with his car www.washingtonpost.com/business/int...
America’s plan to protect pedestrians failed. A young woman’s death reveals why.
U.S. officials adopted Europe's Vision Zero initiative, but many cities have seen an increase in pedestrian fatalities despite efforts to improve road safety.

If one feels so strongly that AVs are necessary because driving by people is too unsafe, they should take that idea further and support reducing the need to drive in all or most circumstances. We don’t need AVs to make safety improvements, and we shouldn’t get stuck on tech fixes. Gift link
