From the foreshore today - broken clay pipe stems, the cigarette butt equivalent from the past, but more environmentally friendly. The thicker the stem, the older the pipe - these from 17th to 19thC. Some pottery sherds too - Roman amphora & mortarium, shell-tempered & green-glazed Surrey whiteware.
