Good thread on One Nation
There's polling today that suggests on current numbers One Nation could win 30+ seats. Here's a quick thread of why I think this is *very* unlikely to actually pan out

Now, a federal election probably won't be until early 2028, and a lot could change, but here's why I'm not too worried now

Did you finish that frozen kangaroo statue?
Sure boss, real fucking sexy just like you asked.
What?

One nation is constitutionally incapable of functioning as a normal party. The only way it resolves disputes is by the person whose name is not Pauline Hanson leaving or the entire party imploding only to be reborn again
I am quite happy if most of the Nats and a handful of Libs defect to One Nation, and in doing so destroy the orthodoxy of Australian political conservatism (including the Libs and the Nats) that has already been effectively dead for a decade. Too many on the left will shit the bed. You don't need to

Went to a Swedish hockey game. Won a watch. May have appeased on Swedish television. It was an odd experience

Despite everything we’ve seen over the past two years, this is probably the most shameful episode in Australian media history/ political collusion.

The lead story on the SMH is Albanese’s political opponent, who lost his seat, trying to force the government to back his own pick for a RC. Madness.

I think we can all agree this would be the funniest possible outcome
So like, what if Maduro is somehow acquitted?
January 5, 2026 at 1:25 AM
So what happens if/when a US court orders Maduro’s release?
Senator Lee said that Secretary of State Rubio told him Venezuelan President Maduro was arrested by U.S. forces to stand trial on criminal charges in the United States.

Mistborn the final empire as a prestige high value tv series.
OK, less contentious post:

You've been placed in charge of a movie studio, and have an unlimited budget to adapt any work of your choosing that has never been made into a live-action TV series or film. What are you picking?

For me: PC Hodgell's Kencyrath Cycle and there's no close second

This is very good on that hockey show. My view: there’s nothing wrong with making a male/male romance for a predominantly female audience, but let’s not then pretend it’s something else
Again, I truly *loved* this week’s episode of Heated Rivalry, but IT IS A WISH FULFILLMENT ROMANCE. The success of a gay hockey romance TV show, largely watched by people who are neither hockey players nor hockey fans, is not “proof that the world is ready and all we would do is love you”

Focussing on this from a pure security perspective, it’s wild that an IS-linked attack was just carried out in Australia and we’re barely talking about it - the focus is on protestors and universities.

Magnificent:

"As I write, Australia’s mainstream journalists—many of whom rank among the dumbest on Earth—are riling up great dramas and screeds in a tone and style that is distinctly American, which is to say, worrying."

It has come to my attention that perhaps not everyone is aware that ISIS is fundamentally opposed to Palestinian nationalism, just as it is to Syrian, Lebanese, Egyptian, and Iraqi nationalism.
David Frum and the Atlantic couldn’t let the blood dry before getting this take out.

The actual evidence we have (imagine considering that!) suggests an ISIS connection for the shooters.

But no, we have to find a way to blame Palestinians and American college students as fast as possible.

Scum.
