Laws stayed as is for most of his career, fossilised in the amber we call Australia’s media landscape, the evolution of which moves so slowly it can barely be perceived by the human eye, let alone your average talkback radio listener. He looked the same since the early 1990s — as if Jimmy Saville and Greg Norman fell into the teleporter from The Fly — and his opinions, too, stayed as static as the dial of those calling in to complain about immigrants, The Greens, or The Youth, or to hear him wax lyrical about fine scotch and miniskirts. In his 71 years on air, he maintained an odd blend of approachability and edge, a quintessentially Australian kindness, which is to say a false one that can snap away in a millisecond of boredom, bigotry, or plain old pettiness. He lacked the overt evil of his longtime rival Alan Jones (did not share his love of fucking underaged boys etc.) but kept up the steady hum of false mateship that underscores most the hurt and darkness in this proudly two-faced country. To say he got it down to a fine art means something to someone somewhere, surely
