First time watch: Hobson's Choice. Absolutely wonderful. I only knew Brenda de Banzie as the villain in The Man Who Knew Too Much (one of my favorite Hitchcocks) and she is so, so different here- I'm smitten. Great dialogue, great characters, great performances. Most fun movie I've seen in a while.

Whenever we get into the cycle of trying to figure out a shooter’s politics to explain his actions, I wish that more people were familiar with Sondheim’s brilliant musical “Assassins”. Desperate, lonely people trying to seize the importance and meaning they feel their lives are owed. With the 1/

I’m at a loss for words at this Supreme Court action. So many of the cliche signifiers of totalitarianism are popping up everywhere- giant banners of the glowering leader, troops in the streets, people being snatched by masked police, “show me your papers!”. Good piece by @radiofreetom.bsky.social

I genuinely love that LED strip lights come on reels that are obviously made in molds repurposed from old Super8 reels.

Call me a radical, but I think if your response to seeing human beings who are homeless and/or mentally ill is “EWWW! GET THEM OUT OF MY SIGHT!” and not “What can we do to help these unfortunate people?”, then you are fundamentally a shitty person.

Finally saw Naked Gun (with some nervousness because of my love of the original)…. So funny. Right on target. Exactly what I hoped it would be.

Just read that Enzo Staiola passed away (to be honest, I had no idea he was still alive). A beautiful performance in Bicycle Thieves, one of those perfect movies that time, familiarity, and even excessive praise cannot dim in the slightest. I’m tearing up just thinking of it. Ciao, Bruno.

One of my favorite recent animated features came up in discussion… so here is the Oscar winning short by the same director. Just beautiful, wordless storytelling.

When left-wing American Jews comment on a rise in antisemitism in the US - without ever mentioning Israel or attempting to scapegoat Palestinian solidarity activism - here are some trends over the course of the decade since Trump first ran for President that they are likely referring to:

This is one of the greatest animated films of all time. As our country slips more and more into dark authoritarianism and Trump tries to take control of The Kennedy Center and other arts institutions, I think about this Czech masterpiece a lot.

Some uplift- the most gorgeous film ever made. For my students’ last class today I curated an animation fest. I thought I’d end with Trnka’s “The Hand”, about an artist struggling against dictatorship. But everyone needs hope and beauty so instead, this. A reminder of what hand crafted art can do.
