This is a new low from a govt plumbing the depths of performative cruelty in hopes that the public won’t notice they have no answers to the real issues facing this country

A sensible, humane govt would focus on safe routes to prevent people making dangerous small boat crossings

Labour is about to announce atrocious new legislation on asylum - sign this to show them a different approach is possible!
Lift the Ban: Open letter
Sign an open letter calling on the Home Secretary to #LiftTheBan on people seeking asylum being able to work. It’s time to unlock talents, supercharge the economy, and let people thrive.

Even suggesting this should be so far beyond acceptable that her political career is ruined forever.
The Sun has been told Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will on Monday propose confiscating jewellery, watches, necklaces from asylum seekers to meet asylum costs

This reflects the most controversial aspect of the Danish scheme - the Jewellery Law. The toughest Labour MPs thought this was OTT

We were told "they're acting this way to attract voters, but they will steer left once they're in power".

How's that one working out?

It should be illegal for employers to make you fill out 60+ question psychological screenings during the application process. Absolutely ridiculous.

The fact that this person remains Health Secretary is objectively one of the most significant British political scandals of the post-Covid era. But because he's doing something the media barons like, everyone has decided it's fine.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting says that the British Medical Association, which represents Britain's doctors, is a threat to the NHS. Streeting took a record £225k from private healthcare-related donors in just two years.
British Medical Association ‘threat to future of NHS’, says Streeting ahead of doctors’ strike
Health secretary accuses doctors’ union of ‘cartel-like behaviour’ and tells it to ‘get real’ over pay demands

No, MS Word, I do NOT want you to summarize the document I AM LITERALLY WRITING MYSELF. Why would I need that? God, I hate how intrusive this s--t is. I just want to make it go away and it appears that our institutional version of the software does not have any of the off switches for it.

Beyond fed up with how MPs have leapt on the chance to turn a transphobic murder into something to do with children's access to mobile phones, completely washing their hands of the transphobic radicalisation of adults that has driven this hate.

It's our version of school shootings and video games.

This is true of many art forms, but my interdisciplinary wander into game studies has shown this to very much be the case for games and play in particular.

It both interests and frustrates me when I see academia struggling to grapple with ambiguity in art! Spoilers: it's usually due to colonialism.
the word "game" predates people's attempts to define it and it has always described categories of activities that lie outside the strict academic framework. any attempts to define "game" are regionally and linguistically locked and predicated on cultural norms

Trying to find a balance between [writing a literature review about spectator agency that includes play and ludonarrative loops] and [writing a literature review about play that focuses on agency] is a tricky balancing act that I fear I might have been doing a bad job at so far...

On Saturday I had a mysterious email from the library informing me that a book (which was on my office desk) had been returned.

I get in this morning to find said book still firmly on my desk.

Spooky...

Oh look: Bridget Phillipson is boasting that she is willing to pour another can of diesel onto the education bonfire despite the unions (that are filled with actually trained educators) very clearly telling her it will make things worse
Once again… testing is not teaching.

Testing children does not teach them to read and it doesn’t encourage schools to teach children to read. It encourages schools to teach to the test.

I think it's important to remember: the scary thing isn't that AI is becoming so pervasive, but rather the fact that so many people are so easily manipulated that they believe what AI says over their own critical faculties.

And since then the UK has given two anti-trans hate groups charity status, LGBA and Sex Matters.

It's 2025, can we stop telling people that they "need to come out of their shells?"

It is neither your place nor within your skillset to deconstruct whatever trauma makes a person feel that they have to hide who they are around people they aren't comfortable with.

I'm fed up of job applications for minimum wage work asking "why do you want to work here" - what do you think you're measuring with this question? My ability to lie to you? Or should I be honest and tell you 'I need a job and you're hiring"?
