My gosh — After Israeli forces tear-gassed this kid, making him collapse, other soldiers then "detained the ambulance carrying Aysam from the Beita Emergency Center to Nablus for several minutes, interrogating the driver about Aysam’s injury, location, and cause before it was allowed to continue."
New — Israeli forces just killed this Palestinian boy.

Last month, he and his family were harvesting olives. Soldiers bombarded them with tear gas, making him collapse.

He was in critical condition until today.

He is the 47th kid killed by Israeli soldiers and settlers in the West Bank this year.

On #RememberanceDay in Canada we say #LestWeForget because forgetting means we fail to honour those who gave their lives defending freedom from fascists and nazis. And all those who still defend us today.

It’s also because if we forget, we’re doomed to repeat.

That’s more relevant now than ever.

Pardon my suddenly watery eyes, but a long-time regular just stopped in with this.

He'd been reading, found this line, and thought of me, so he wrote it out and brought it in.

"I am a handmaiden of civilization. I am a bookseller."

Great new report on AI data centers in advance of COP30:

“Feeding data centers with fossil fuels is taking the climate crisis and blowing it up like the Incredible Hulk. A gas-fed AI boom is going to hurdle us past any chance of keeping to our climate goal.”

Your honor, we merely built the copyright-violating machine, advertised its copyright-violating capabilities, and profited from making it available to millions of users. How could we be responsible when it is used to violate copyrights?
“OpenAI argued its AI models didn’t store/copy specific training data but, rather, reflected what they learned based on the entire training data set. Since the output was generated as a result of user inputs (prompts), it wasn’t the defendants, but the respective user who would be liable for it.”

OMG

Is this why some of my math students just write random handfuls of math-related words and expect *me* to make sense of it? B/c they were taught to read using "3 clues" to approximate the meaning so now they expect me to apply the same method to reading their work?

I did not know about this pedagogy. But my goodness, in the description in the linked article, it sure seems like is a way of teaching children to read in a manner similar to how an LLM "thinks" - no wonder it doesn't work!

this makes me think about all the people who’ve been convinced their struggles with reading are just due to some immutable feature of their brains, and not hidden institutional failure

I see this article is going around again. It’s kind of long, but I’d argue it’s required reading to understand what’s happening.
People think LLMs are fine because they were being taught to read like LLMs — just guess what word is next!

This is an absolutely bananas read. Such a perfect example of the "this makes logical sense so it must be right" approach being completely wrong because nobody checked the actual science.

And ironically this is exactly the way LLMs function - the definition of a poor reader 🙃
