#writingcommunity Everyone's championing Bookshop dot org as being different and kinder to authors... No, they're not.
Unfortunately they are blocking all erotica from distribution. Very sad to see a champion for indie bookstores take such a restrictive stance on fiction.

I like to think that most of what Miah reads can be divided into one of two categories:

The driest, most boring academic texts you can possibly imagine.

OR

Some of the raunchiest, most gratuitous kink filled smut ever written.

Disturbing but not surprising—more confirmation that LLMs are copying machines
We extracted (parts of) 12 books in experiments with 4 frontier-lab, production LLMs.

We prompted the LLMs with a short prefix of a book and asked them to complete the rest. For Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, we extracted 95.8% of the book from jailbroken Claude 3.7 Sonnet.

Kaffy has a giant thread up and down. Read that first.

I wanted to just reconfirm what happened during the royalty dust up in March 2025 (in which the below screenshots from Emily are about). Regardless of what she says, here is what actually happened.

1. She posted what started it.

The whole "Grok admits" "Grok apologizes" thing reminds me of the famous IBM presentation quote that evidently everyone has forgotten. And I do think representing your brand on social media counts as a "management decision".

On May 6, 2025, I hit “publish” on my very first post here and announced myself to the internet as a former academic turned speculative smut peddler. I had no idea what would happen next—only that I wanted to write weird, horny stories with bi wife energy. Fast-forward to the end of the year, and somehow that wild impulse has turned into a debut F/F novelette, a stack of short stories in multiple crazy anthologies, a handful of private commissions, and an alarming body count of aliens, monsters, and emotionally unavailable weirdos.

I think you should get weirder and freakier about their writing next year. Expel the thoughts of "is this too much? too strange? too out there?" fuck it, we ball. Break the ancient seal cast upon ye. Unleash the inner esoteric thing within clawing, begging to wreak creative havoc.

Can I just mention that @laurentaylorbak.bsky.social is a fabulous editor. I haven't read her "speculative smut" yet, but she did wonders for my short story which needed some care and attention.

it's not just appropriating someone's artwork (important as that is!); it's also reframing these incredibly sheltered comemierdas, who shift all the risk and consequences from their decisions onto others while hoarding the profits, into this position of casual, almost heroic precarity.
I guess it's fitting that it's a reimagined, worse version of someone else's artwork

Yes, I too would love to live in a world where art is accessible freely to all and yet artists are paid a living wage, but as this magical wagical pixie wixie land does not exist, please don’t steal from us.

Folks, if your library doesn’t have a book you want to read, ask them to buy a copy. Most have a convenient form and will let you know when it comes in. If your library offers ILL, they can even borrow books from other libraries.
