Today is World AIDS Day, a day that reminds me of the decades-long fight for dignity, science, and compassion. We’ve come so far because activists, researchers, and communities refused to be ignored.

Remember: Almost all of us are the descendants of immigrants who fled persecution, or were brought to America under duress, or sought better lives for themselves and their descendants.

Politicians who stoke fear and hatred over immigration want you to forget this.

Do not.

Just to review, in the last week the President of the United States:

- Refused to condemn the rise of Neo-Nazis in his party
- Tried to block the release of further evidence he sexually abused children
- Encouraged the execution of Congressional Democrats

Those are just factual statements.

The depth of the shame of a country this wealthy and abundant allowing its people to go hungry is impossible to measure. The fact that a handful of people could fix this by paying their fair share of taxes while still remaining obscenely wealthy makes it even worse.

I read 1984.
And Fahrenheit 451.
And A Brave New World. And The Handmaid‘s Tale.
And The Giver.
And The Road.
And The Lottery.
And The Parable of the Sower.
And The Hunger Games.

I know what I’m seeing.

Heartwood by Amity Gaige will likely end up as one of my top reads of the year.

It’s *sort of* about the search for a young nurse who has disappeared while hiking the Appalachian Trail, but don’t go into this one thinking it’s a thriller or a mystery. It’s really a meditation.

You are living through the unthinkable: the president of the United States using the military to seize domestic power. The greatest crisis of executive power in American history, at the hands of the worst, most corrupt, and most unfit president in American history.

He’s saying it. Are you listening? 🇺🇸

📌The President of the United States posted a FAKE VIDEO TO THE WORLD of a kneeling Barack Obama being placed in handcuffs, and we are supposed go along like it is just another day.
Our press has so completely lost the thread it would be laughable if it wasn't so damn dangerous and disgusting.

Just finished What Kind of Paradise by Janelle Brown (while in stunning Botswana on safari) and it is one of my favorite books of the year so far.

Final vote. 50-50. VP breaks the tie.

One single GOP Senator could have stopped this abomination. Saved millions of parents from watching their child go hungry. Saved the lives destroyed when Medicaid disappears.

They will all live forever with the horror of this bill.

I worked at Planned Parenthood.

They diagnose cancers while still treatable. They help women decide what birth control works for them. They help those working through mental health challenges.

Defunding them just harms people who already struggle to find places to get care.

I think I need to write a whole essay on how one thing said to us by one person just one time can affect the whole trajectory of our lives and career.

The coverage of the Bezos wedding yesterday was so saturated that I dreamed about it last night. I mean this is not a thing I care about in the least. One example of how the things that flood our feed also flood our mind and spirit, mostly in the worst ways. The algorithm controls everything.

A win! Federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to bar international students from enrolling at Harvard. The preliminary injunction, issued by a Boston court, allows roughly 7,000 Harvard students and recent graduates to continue studying and working legally in the U.S.

A friend just asked me what I do to stay hopeful and I told him one of my favorite strategies…I stay hopeful by remembering that no one has any idea what the fuck is going to happen, so as long as we don’t know, we gotta do what we can.

For decades the NRA and other gun nuts told us that their guns were to protect us all from a tyrannical government. So a tyrannical government is here, they are all sitting on their asses, and the people who want gun control have taken to the streets to defy the tyrannical government instead.
