in 2026 i'm going to write little essays about skateboarding and life and send them by email to people who'd like to receive them. substack is very bad, metrics are death, and i'd like to write less publicly about these things.

DM or respond with an email addy if you'd like to be included!

MD...he's a skater. These are great.
You can find three new poems by the brilliant MD Wheatley in The Bulb Region today.

The pack includes “The Golden Bowl,” a sonnet written after @tomsnarsky.bsky.social's “The Silver Cord,” which was previously published in our pages.

When in an interview long ago I mentioned Michael as a polestar, an inspiration for me, he called me out of the blue (I still have his message saved) & for hours shared stories, wisdom & advice with me. May your memory be a blessing Michael Silverblatt. It already is www.latimes.com/california/s...

Agree, but let's go ahead and cut "college professors," "students," and "seminar room," and say "anyone can give to anyone, including themselves" instead
I think the greatest gift college professors in the humanities can give to students right now is a seminar room where, for 80 minutes twice a week, nothing that happens to them is a sales pitch for an AI product.

I do feel compelled to mention that there was a time when meaningless people uttered awful things and we simply were not alerted to it, that we've made "look at this asshole" into a regular fixture of our days, and that perhaps doing this to ourselves, to one another, is *super* within our control.

Roosevelt Institute Fellow Jess Calarco really zooms right the hell away from skateboarding here and back to motherhood, but if anyone wants to discuss a 60-year experiment in unorganized play that equally centers the developing individual self and the group in which that self exists, holler.
Relatedly, I'd bet that a not insignificant portion of the "loneliness crisis" stems from kids' shift away from informal play and toward formal organized activities, most of which end up being mom-organized, such that kids never learn to socially organize themselves.
great argument here for avoiding organized sports and buying a skateboard instead.

When we moved to Indiana in 2012, my husband was working remotely, and the isolation was rough, so he started looking for local social activities and ended up starting a rec hockey league. Sadly, the league fell apart when we left Indiana in 2022, because no one stepped up to run it in his place.

i'm in the first writing group of my life. it's with two extremely lauded and award-winning women writers and one pretty lauded woman writer who is likely to win an award soon. i am terrified of these three women who are my writing group, it's so rad. 5,000 words they want. i'm actually shaking.
