Democrats do not actually want to reform anything, so they have to be dragged kicking and screaming to the most milquetoast reforms

Republicans will react to the mildest proposals like they're the french nobility and you're proposing land reform

The theory behind incrementalism relies on two things: the people implementing it having a big end goal they want to get to, and an opponent who will behave reasonable and agree to smaller steps

Neither is true with democrats and republicans

as ever, if being reasonable and having a small goal has such a great success rate, here's a fun challenge: go to a suburban neighborhood and see how long it takes you to get a bike lane or a teen center in the area approved.

surely THIS would be fast and easy!

hahahaha.

this is oft a strategy that pitches itself as reasonable and pragmatic but what it really is is 'conflict avoidant'. actual incrementalism generally is achieved with the fury of a sun bearing down on your reps, not 'repeated calm requests to change their minds'

schumer sucks shit as always but i think there is something useful here to show here. when anybody advocates for incrementalism, reform, all that: to get *this* level of incrementalism from your reps, *this is how bad things have to be*.

getting mild steps, mild change, takes nuclear force.
Majority of the country now wants to abolish and/or dismantle ICE and yet Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. told the caucus the message had to be to “restrain, reform and restrict ICE.”

Once again it looks like Schumer is about to choke after getting a massive opportunity.

So pathetic and weak.
Senate Democrats plot strategy as DHS standoff deepens heading into shutdown week
Two sources who were on a Democratic caucus strategy call Sunday said Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told the group the message must be to “restrain, reform and restrict ICE.”

Dear neighbor, It is not the time to let your guard down, nor is it the time to stop organizing.

While Bovino will be leaving Minneapolis along with some U.S. Border Patrol agents, there is still no specific plan that has been communicated to the public. 1/

And you call yourself an ally.

In Borges' story the Lottery in Babylon, the government begins literally randomly generating and enforcing laws, life becomes a continual chaos of shifting and nonsensical and *cruel* rules.

A good example of why the law is fake, and why trying to gotcha its hypocrisy and stupidity is futile, are voting literacy tests.

The whole point was that it allowed selective enforcement, the shittiness and internal contradiction was a *feature* not a bug.

Just in general, folks, if you see a "leftish" argument-- like "that's ableism/racism/sexism" for an extremely popular and effective protest tactic, guess what! It's not any of those things!

There are people trying to stop others from using whistles, and next they'll say it's ableism.

As your disability advocate friend, I will be the first with serious sensory sensitivity to say that I would rather be in pain than someone get abducted, or shot.

Block/mute this argument, it's an op.

These worthless assholes can't keep themselves from adding qualifiers to their opposition.

Because they don't oppose ICE/CBP on principle, only aesthetics.

Graham Linehan proves the point that trans liberationists have been saying from the start:

If you'll permit dehumanising and stripping the rights of trans people, you will dehumanise and strip the rights of anyone on a long enough timeline.
This is exactly the same playbook Graham Linehan uses against trans people, where defending trans rights is cast as defending "rape" and "paedophilia." He uses "rape" and "paedophilia" as punchlines, and, therefore, all of his hate speech and advocation for violence against his enemies is justified.
