This year marks the 250th anniversary of US independence from Britain. I'm hoping it will also mark the start of British independence from the US.

Our rights? We voted them away. That's what happened. We're not EU citizens anymore because we voted our citizenship away. It's entirely a British decision. Trying to foist the blame onto the EU just isn't constructive or helpful.

Get a grip.

Anyone is "at the whim of the EU” is a really offensive way to frame it.

Brexit is a UK choice. After that, the EU27 applying our laws isn’t “doing what we like”, it’s the predictable consequence of the UK opting out of shared rights and rule-making.

It is in times like this that Tom Lehrer comes to mind - and no, it isn’t Poisoning Pidgins in the Park.

I understand the traditional Finnish approach is not to announce but to let you find out when they’re good and ready for to find out they’re around.

The works of Plato are now being banned at schools in the United States.

Tell me again how censorship is a European problem? 🤔

Absolutely. And this is how their sacrifice is rewarded. Trump is too narcissistic to know this, but the Danish will never forget.

Where is the evidence that "Spain" wanted any such thing? As opposed to the Spanish equivalent of the mayor of Torbay?

The current Schengen arrangements work absolutely fine for British tourists, who are courted by the Spanish tourist board and warmly welcomed every year in their millions.

As for punished? Really, that's your line?

Britons are in EES queues by the UK's sovereign choice.

I think you need to ask these loads of people for their source and please could you link it as well because I am sure you'll agree the Acquis seems absolutely clear on this point.

Its not the attachment to their place in the sun that is wrong, it is the interminable daily/weekly whingeing that the EU will not fix their third country personal wish-lists that is *very* wrong. And hugely tiresome in its incessant repetitiveness.
Yet you contrive to have sympathy for them....

Not to us. It suits us well.
It may be *your* problem though...

What always surprises me is that these people, obv not the lady who posted as she's just referring, happily tell other people they broke the law. Same as my dad's neighbour, 6 mths in Spain and rented out her home in the UK while she was there to fund her life. Sold holiday home in Sp after Brexit.

Well, yeah. Everything he says is true. Foreigners do not have the same privileges and rights as citizens. I don’t know any country where they do.

Maybe the UK should tell the US that it should give UK citizens the right to work freely in the US so they can further their careers?

I was British with Spanish residency when it happened and I didn't have to do anything. I filled in a form to allow me to vote in local elections again, and swapped my residency certificate for a TIE as I wanted an ID card. Drivers Licence, healthcare etc were all sorted, when they should have been.

Just reading “Building Europe (Loth, Wilfried 2015)” about the development of what was to become the EU.
I must admit that I have never had a special admiration for de Gaulle but some of his thoughts about the need for an independent Europe is paramount. He foresaw that we couldn’t really

Brexit wasn’t abstract, writes The Bear.

It stripped out the NHS’s stabilisers – staff, medicines, safety nets – and left us running on fumes.

The cost isn’t just GDP points. It’s lives.
From promises to collapse: The measurable damage Brexit caused the NHS
Staffing gaps, medicine shortages and avoidable harm – the everyday reality of a broken Brexit promise
