This is actually exquisite.
Robert Redford playing a gentle incarnation of death, coming for a frightened old woman in The Twilight Zone episode "Nothing in the Dark" (1962). An extraordinary performance then, terribly bittersweet today

„Quiet, Piggy!“ Just think about that for a minute, and what it means to live in a time when a President can assault a woman in public like that without any consequences.
It‘s quite a testimony to the age of regression we live in.

Spain takes most asylum seekers. The difference? We have a govt that speaks warmly, truthfully & welcomingly about them

Per 100,000 people in 2024, UK came fifth for most applicants (156) after Spain (340), Germany (275), Italy (256) & France (191). EU average last year was 203 per 100,000 people
As UK imposes radical asylum rules, how do the numbers really compare to Europe?
Home secretary Shabana Mahmood is carrying out one of the largest reforms to the asylum system the UK has ever seen. But is the overhaul really proportionate to the numbers arriving on UK shores? Alex...

This is an unusual and thought-provoking analysis of the US economy (both the figures and the psychological response) that may well apply more widely. Definitely worth reading.
This is a fabulous read. The figures might be specific to the USA, but the principle applies wherever neocapitalism has been applied. Read it, and feel it in your bones.

One of my favorite social media redundancies is when people respond to a list of facts with, “I disagree!”

Ma’am and sirs — Mirs, if you will — that isn’t how anything works. You cannot “disagree” with the color of the sky or a timestamped event.

I tell people everywhere (& remind myself often) that bad things make the news headlines because they are not ordinary happenings.

The good stuff gets buried because it IS ordinary. It's not "news", it's happening everywhere. If you look for helpers & kind people, you will always find them. Always.
Just my occasional reminder to not let news about crime in UK from sources biased Left & Right or even the best least biased like Reuters, make you assume we live in a hellhole.
Extremely horrible crime is far from the norm.
Check crime databases for context.
Be vigilant sure but don't get PARANOID.
Why We Forget That Most People Are Good
