My phone screensaver from part of the Hauraki Rail Trail. Hard to comprehend what happened to this river just a week later.

If Jeff Bezos could afford to spend $75 million on the Melania movie & $500 million for a yacht to sail off to his $55 million wedding to give his wife a $5 million ring, please don't tell me he needed to fire one-third of the Washington Post staff.

If people wonder about the power of adhd meds, I was diagnosed Dec 2023 and started medication. Since then I have made 53 skating costumes and sewn probably over 20 other items too. Prior to meds I was lucky to complete 2 costumes a year.

Recently I found my Lalor grandfather had the address 'Kahikatea' named when he was listed for military services. I couldn't find where that was, so asked on a West Coast Historical FB page. An answer wasn't far away! kiwinomadancestors.blogspot.com/2026/02/wher...
Where was Kahikatea on the West Coast?

I helped a friend cancel her Ancestry membership yesterday. She thought she had done it previously but it had auto-renewed. There are even more steps than I remembered to cancel- so many 'are you sure' kind of steps. She had possibly not gone through all the steps before.

A busy few days on Anchor Island for #kakapo2026. We candled 9 eggs yesterday, and all 9 were fertile! That's unusual as #kakapo infertility is usually very high. Here's Waa's nest this morning. #conservation

Drove over to Hastings today. Had time to show a visitor the big new bridge from the Ashhurst carpark. Enjoyed the shadows.

Several people independently recommended this book to me, based on a true story of a child from Tipperary who ended up running a hotel in Queenstown. Had to wait a few weeks to get it via the library. Great writing.

The #Aurora Australis went coronal (directly overhead), extremely rare at 45°S, but also strangely the 3rd coronal event I've been in the past 2 years here in New Zealand during this solar cycle.

These images are 10 seconds apart looking straight up!

I just found out using Luke Howison's wonderful scans of the Intentions to Marry indexes, that a Lalor great-uncle and great-aunt had intentions to marry notices within three days of each other for weddings at their parent's house in South Beach. Did they actually marry on the same day?

@andrewredfern.bsky.social I'm pleased to note that as a result of your AI Legacy webinar I have just used ChatGPT to transcribe a bio I'd written in 1996 for my grandfather that I only had an image left of for some reason. It did a perfect job. Now I can edit it and add some new material!

Yet another grey windy day in Palmy though the showers seem to have eased. But I am glad that I planted some zinnias as they are chirpy no matter what the weather.

The neatest tidiest signature I have seen from my grandfather. Very sadly, on the inquest document from his statement after his 5 year old daughter Annie died of burns- an aunty I heard about but never got to meet. Heartbreaking for the family.

How embarrassing is it to have a PM who finally flies in to a disaster scene only so he can avoid going to Ratana. He should have left it to Mark Mitchell who did seem to know what he was talking about.
