In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.
The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.
The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.
Why?

I think what it comes down to is a base that has recognized there is nothing left to lose—the Union is effectively over, the Constitution a dead letter—but our insulated, elderly, fearful Senators are trying to protect all their little bags and nuts. They just need it to hang on long enough for them

American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.
