Happy new year!

Exciting news: There's new transit coming in 2026—including metro, light rail, commuter rail, aerial tram, & BRT lines across North America. Overall, the US, Canada, & Mexico will add 150 miles of fixed-guideway transit.

It's all on The Transport Politic in my annual roundup ⏬

🔥 A #waleg bill to watch this session: HB 2134. Adds the allcaps verbiage: "Each regional transportation planning organization shall develop a plan that...PROVIDES FOR REDUCTIONS IN GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND VEHICLE MILES TRAVELED."

So simple, you wonder why it isn't law already.

The $4b in federal grants that CA High-Speed Rail has given up on were specifically earmarked for the Merced-to-Bakersfield segment.

Financially it's a big loss, but procedurally it's one less barrier to skipping Merced and making it to the Bay Area.
Can California High-Speed Rail make it to the Bay?
The project notched a major victory by securing long-term funding. But getting the line to major population centers remains an enormous challenge.

I've been looking through old state transit reports recently, and was astounded at the fact that in 1976 Washington's intercity bus network carried 30 million passengers, half as many as every transit agency in the state at that time. Spokane had nearly 40 daily one way trips to different cities.

The cost of additional delay and reduced resiliency in the light rail system were cited as reasons to set aside the idea of dropping Ballard Link's planned tunnel under Downtown. But the discussion is likely to set up a broader debate around the tunnel.

A few thoughts on why the latent popularity of car-free living hasn’t translated to the funding changes necessary to make it possible:

The millions of people who would like to drive less aren’t organized, so elected officials rarely hear from them, allowing the car-dominated status quo to fester.

In response to a question about considering cutting funding for highway expansion projects to fill the budget shortfall, @juliareedwa.bsky.social doesn't want to spend another dollar on highway expansion until we address our existing backlog of maintenance of our transportation infrastructure.

I was so sad to hear about the death of a cyclist due to a hit-and-run on Beacon Ave. Allie was a beloved community member, avid biker, & advocate for safer transit & streets. My condolences to their family and friends. But condolences are hollow if we don’t take action to prevent the next tragedy.
