In fully unexpected action -- the House just adjourned for the day at 5 PM on the dot. I will absolutely take it. #waleg

One more bill and then... our turn!
February 11, 2026 at 12:42 AM
This bill allows some LAMIRDS to use the middle housing law. We're a yes. #waleg
February 11, 2026 at 12:39 AM
Before that, we're doing a bill on LAMIRDs -- Lah-MERDs -- Limited Areas of More Intensive Rural Development. Your acronym of the day! #waleg
February 11, 2026 at 12:39 AM
Oh, and shout out @typewriteralley.bsky.social who is also tracking this. #waleg

Ok housing nerds, get excited. HB 1687 which adds social housing public development authorities to the housing cooperation law is coming up for a vote! Shout out to all the advocates @houseourneighbors.bsky.social and @mayorofseattle.bsky.social who have pushed for this. #waleg

This bill allows certain exemptions to the public records act for firearm purchase permits. We'll vote for it. #waleg

HB 1916 passes! The Shield of Voters moves to the Senate. And now we will vote on a gun bill sponsored by Rep Walsh. #waleg
February 11, 2026 at 12:33 AM
Rep Walsh just notes that in other states they have regular "purging" of voter rolls. True and not only that, but specific people tend to be the ones getting purged over others! #waleg
February 11, 2026 at 12:30 AM
Rep Walsh says "the right to not have your legal and proper vote diluted is also a sacred constitutional right" -- Has anyone told the Republican party in Texas or Florida or heck, the Washington 14th LD that? #waleg
February 11, 2026 at 12:16 AM
For those of us back here in reality, Washington State has one of the most secure voting systems in the nation. We are protected by the sword of our election process -- the WA Voting Rights Act. HB 1916 gives us a shield to ensure voters are protected from fringe challenges #waleg
February 11, 2026 at 12:12 AM
Now he's saying that because someone who is listed twice on the voting roll proves that they're voting more than once which isn't true. This guy is really into selective voter misinformation. #waleg
February 11, 2026 at 12:10 AM
Same member just said he wants to make the process of challenging "improper" voter registration "as easy as possible." #waleg
February 11, 2026 at 12:09 AM
We're working on an significant piece of legislation right now, HB 1916, which addresses the rash of voter registration challenges trying to intimidate people from voting. The Republican who spent last session referencing his genitals on the floor spread a little election misinformation. #waleg

I actually know the reason! It’s being tested on the Northeast Regional tracks because Amtrak owns those tracks so they have the most control over the testing process. In WA, the tracks are owned by BNSF the freight railroad

When do we want it? Now.

The area outside the doors of the chamber resembles a shark tank, with hungry bill supporters and detractors sending notes into the chamber to try to encourage a member to come out and talk to them about their issue. #waleg

Next year I'll be doing a lot of work on changing our higher education oversight system. We need a real funding model for this essential education in WA and we need more systemic oversight and vision than the unaccountable "Council of Presidents" provides. Other states do this way better. #waleg

WA Guaranteed Admissions Program, expanding an existing pilot to give every qualified HS student guaranteed admission to most public universities also died this year for the 3rd time because of the fiscal notes from the universities. Not a good year for higher ed innovation. #waleg

I just stepped outside of the House doors to chat with a lobbyist about a bill and noticed the President of @uofwa.uw.edu is out in the hall. UW testified "con" on my bill to expand free college to families earning the median income so I can guess he's not here to talk about affordability #waleg

Meanwhile members and lobbyists and community members are lobbying those folks hard -- to kill a bill, to elevate it, to bring it forward or put it down. So while the camera is on the floor action and voting, most of the actual activity is happening in the wings. #waleg
February 10, 2026 at 7:16 PM
This is the main role of the House leadership -- especially the Speaker & the Floor Leader. We have so many hours and too many bills -- which get designated as the ones that are worth taking up hours of floor time? Which die bc we just don't have the time to spend? Which do we trade? #waleg

Congratulations to new member from the 5th LD Zach Hall for passing his first bill off the House Floor, a big milestone for every legislator! We're big Zach fans here #waleg
