And if you think this type of stuff is anti-big tech, think again. Big tech platforms stand to benefit the most. These laws will wipe out their competition, create exceptions for the worst offenders (like X), and allow them to profit handsomely from creating their own age verification tools.

For now, the Ohio law just causes me inconvenience. But we're constantly under threat of these laws going federal, superseding advances around digital privacy in some states and making us all hand over sensitive data. Data that is constantly being leaked and exploited because of these laws!

These laws don't really protect kids, they primarily disadvantage marginalized people (including kids) and seek to censor and make online life more difficult for progressives. But a lot of Democrats have gotten onboard because of the appeal to child safety. It's all spelled out in Project 2025!

Here's an example of how useless and frustrating internet laws to "protect kids" are in practice: When I'm in Ohio, where I am during the holidays, I can't use my Bluesky DMs—unless I hand over my ID to a company owned by Epic Games. Why? To protect kids, of course!
