Just finished a pile of marking meaning I’m entering the most magical time of year: The week with little or no teaching and no marking 🤩🤣

Excited for tomorrow’s final Research Design & Method Selection session. Going to discuss data visualisation & dissemination. Calling upon my favourite Tidy Tuesday entries from @nrennie.bsky.social & @harveyhumphrey.bsky.social ‘s ethnodrama “As Is”.

Some glass half full (of shitt) thinking here: The “let’s be as explicitly cruel as possible” approach anti trans and anti migrant bigots are taking is going to backfire on them. Makes the job of communicating why solidarity & resistance is important soo much easier.

When the time comes that people have to at least act as if they care about trans people, do not forget and do not forgive a single person associated with this who isn’t speaking out about it now.

Don’t let them say it was a different time. Don’t let them say they didn’t know. We know.

It’s my 30th today so celebrating by actually taking a coffee+drawing break on my busy teaching day! Second year in a row my Birthday has fallen on my busiest day 😅

Solidarity with Edinburgh colleagues!
Don't cross the picket line!

We are on strike because of UoE's budget cuts that have and will affect students and staff.

We are striking for a better university, join us!

This is such a massive loss. Alice Wong’s work is outstanding. We are all worse off without her. If you haven’t I would highly recommend you read her work. She’s my go to mention when discussing impactful people who studied Sociology. I’m gutted by this news 💔

Has anyone used proton drive? I’m planning to ditch gmail but also looking for a google drive/docs alternative for working collaboratively? Suggestions welcome. Looking for options that prioritise privacy & not using our work to feed AIs.

It’s one of those days that I’m very thankful that most of my marking is research proposals & projects where students have autonomy over what they investigate. The variety makes my marking load bearable.Great seeing what students want to research. Would love to review how that changes over time.

Thinking of applying to a sociology + arty related thing so pulled out some of my old zines. Feel like they say a lot about my flavour of weird 😅

Kinda want to revisit the boxes in context one as it explores differences between essentialism & social constructionism.

An excellent resource from one of my favourite colleagues. And students on our Media Research Methods course get to hear from @kenglish.bsky.social with their lecture on questionnaires and surveys next week! (Please don’t ask me about numbers. Kirstie Ken is here for numbers. I only do words).

On Tuesday we launched the new Glasgow Lab for Intersex, Non-binary & Trans Studies! Thank you to everyone who came to the launch event & my fellow co-directors. It was a great evening & the first of what Iam sure will be many fantastic GLINTS events.

Labour is telling you VERY LOUDLY who to vote for if you value human rights. And it's definitely NOT LABOUR.
Woah! So Labour's position really is, 'telling us off for breaching human rights undermines the case for human rights'? Proper Trumpian stuff from Labour's answer to Suella Braverman.

I just fist pumped and made an audible “yass” in a coffee shop cause I got an email confirming one of my undergrad’s ethical approval…hope my students know how invested I am in their work 😅😂

Absolute must read given the recent rise of AI. Despite feeling more pessimistic than the author I loved her account here, particularly how wide reaching it was. The amount of examples across both geographic contexts and the contexts in which AI is applied was great.
October 7, 2025 at 6:36 PM
A few years ago if a sci-fi book was pitched as “those with power love AI more than they tolerate trans people” I would have thought it was far fetched…yet here we are 🤷‍♂️🙃
We’re on a speedrun to bluesky banning anti ai hate speech but leaving anti trans hate speech awesome
