The EU Court has found that we have failed to even bring in the laws we’d need to comply with our obligations to combat water pollution.
On those grounds, the Court (Ninth Chamber) hereby: Declares that, by failing to transpose fully or correctly Article 2(38), Article 4(2), Article 5(2), Article 7(3), Article 9(2), Article 11(3)(a) to (d) in relation to groundwater, Article 11(3)(e), Article 11(3)(i) in relation to surface water, Article 11(3)(I) in relation to groundwater, and points 1.4 and 1.5 of Annex II to, and points 1.3.1 to 1.3.5 and point 2.4.5, first paragraph, of Annex V to Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2000 establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy, Ireland has failed to fulfil its obligations under those provisions; 2. Dismisses the action as to the remainder; 3. Orders Ireland to pay the costs.

My letter in today's Clare Champion calling out the xenophobic dog-whistling from our local TD, Timmy Dooley, as well as Sinn Féin's Matt Carthy.

Dear Sir, I was deeply disturbed to hear Timmy Dooley, alongside Matt Carthy, on The Tonight Show echoing far-right sentiments regarding immigration and the strain on our housing supply, particularly with regard to international protection applicants. There is a marked difference between debating the carrying capacity of a functioning housing market, and discussing how many desperate people we must sacrifice to avoid fixing a broken one. My partner and I have been struggling to retain housing and to buy a house for the better part of 4 years. Immigrants are not to blame for our difficulties, housing policies that prioritise the investments of landlords such as Timmy Dooley are. I do not want to hear discussions about which type of immigrants we should turn away first. I want to see leadership deciding which aspects of our broken housing system we will tackle first. I want to hear debates on which emergency measures we will take to ensure illegal short-term lets are brought back into continuous use. I want to hear how the government plan to address their ineffective policies regarding dereliction. I want to hear what policy changes can be implemented to accelerate progress on tackling vacancy. The government's aggressive right-wing pivot following their defeat in the presidential election was sadly predictable. It is obvious the government wish to present immigrants as a scapegoat to desperate people such as myself, in the hopes of appealing to the worst parts of our nature. I would like to take this opportunity to reassure any vulnerable people who may be reading that this ploy will not work. I am sorry for the escalating atmosphere of fear and xenophobia you have been subjected to. You deserve better than this from a country where migration is such an integral part of our own troubled history. The people of Clare deserve better than the weak leadership we saw last night. All Airbnbs being rented year round are in contravention of planning laws. Houses built for private residential tenancy need to apply for change of use. If you built a house without following the rules it could be torn down. We could solve this Airbnb problem overnight, there’s no political will.

Remember - if it's OK to call @paulmurphy.pbp.ie et al "far left" or "hard left" for saying that people deserve homes and basic services, then it's entirely OK for you to call politicians "far right" and "racist" when they try to blame a housing disaster they created on immigrants.
