ICE was in no way liable. The narrow issue was that people were held past their release date when the sheriff's office did not have authority to execute ICE detainers. (ICE agents can arrest people with detainers.)

The 287g agreements are so important to the administration because under all three versions, law enforcement are permitted to execute detainers -- in other words, they can arrest people for being potentially deportable and, in most cases, can make an independent assessment. 2/2

(4/X) They're not that strategic. They just start doing stuff they think will scare you (like canceling all the flights, cutting SNAP etc.). You have to just keep escalating, or at least let them keep stepping on their own dick. Don't give them an easy out .

As much as anything else it’s survivor bias. Only people who survived first (or second, or third) exposure are still around, so clearly having had it before provides benefit, or they would have died in the first place. People mistake survivorship for fitness all the time.
