I have more aspirations than accomplishments and more anxiety than action; I am a lover of tea and good stories and the silence of wild places, of sun on my face, gravel under my bike, and boulders beneath my hands.
It’s terrifying to imagine a 7th grade boy (like my son) having to endure something like this. This is so very wrong.
ICE kidnapped a 7th-grader with a pending asylum claim and spirited him out of state without notifying his parents, seemingly with the cooperation of the local police in Everett, MA.

RFK Jr on Tylenol and autism: "It is not proof. We're doing the studies to make the proof."

This is a really good article - it’s a month old but quite relevant now with RFK’s announcements about causes and “cures” for autism.

It’s hard to believe he actually cares about autism when he kills funding for people who have been studying it for years with dedication and rigor.
RFK Jr. Vowed to Find the Environmental Causes of Autism. Then He Shut Down Research Trying to Do Just That.
While touting a $50 million initiative to identify the causes of autism, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is helping lead an administration that is rolling back protections against pollution and toxic chemicals,...

Just for something that’s not depressing 😊 what a great shot of this bear
I guess this has probably already gone viral somewhere but I am simply dying at this picture of a bear that looks like it hired a photographer to do a glamour shoot

It doesn’t bode well for society when people are increasingly convinced that the peaceful norms for civil discussion and representative government are insufficient and that violence is the only remaining response. But the rampant corruption and hate in power now encourages that belief.

Wow Alabama. This has got to be one of the worst book bans I’ve heard of - banning ‘positive descriptions’ only of trans people, to the extreme of banning this picture book, which I actually thought of in terms of neurodivergence when I first read it.
7. Even Red: A Crayon’s Story—a book about a blue crayon mislabeled as red, meant to teach kids about resisting labels and being your own person—has made the list.

The Supreme Court just decided that it’s okay for ICE to profile people for the way they look or the language they speak.

Arizona has been here before and we remember the damage it caused in our communities. This is unacceptable.

Yay Arizona 😊
In 2022, Arizona got rid of peremptory strikes—the primary tool used throughout most of the 20th century to prevent people of color from serving on juries. So far, the state's innovative move appears to be paying off.

In yet another posting on truth social filled with falsehoods and outlandish big lie statements, Liar in Chief, Felon in Chief, American Duce Wannabe, Twice Impeached, and Mad King Donald Trump has again threatened to undo the foundations of the American Democratic Republic by issuing an Executive Order that would Unconstitutionally strip away people's ability to vote by mail. This is hilarious considering how hyped AI is.

And also infuriating given how unsustainable they are…
My goto is to ask LLMs how many states have R in their name. They always fail. GPT 5 included Indiana, Illinois, and Texas in its list. It then asked me if I wanted an alphabetical highlighted map. Sure, why not.

One of my eight year old daughter’s best friends has MAGA parents and it makes it very hard to want to set up play dates. His mom isn’t someone I’d hang out with in terms of personality or shared interests either. Any tips for handling the situation and my own feelings about it?

This is a really, really important story, which is why I provided a gift link. Many people, when they think of higher education, think of elite universities. But most higher education is nonselective (i.e., they admit everyone), and a lot of it is community colleges.

The subculture I grew up in that emphasized truth, logical thinking, and free speech is embracing falsehood, manipulating people to doubt verifiable facts, and suppressing differing opinions. It feels like a complete betrayal even though I can now see the through line of it in recent history.
With Trump's executive orders on AI, tech companies will amass fortunes, and Trump, the wannabe autocrat, gets to control what AI “thinks.”

What’s at risk is merely civilization as we know it and the truth.

Mesa’s non discrimination order has always been a point of pride for me as a city resident. And the whole recall election in the first place is so stupid - it’s a non partisan council and some lady decided to critique her as not having sufficiently conservative Republican values…
Dorean Taylor speaking at a Mesa City Council meeting back in April. Here she talks about wanting the non discrimination ordinance removed specifically to discriminate against transgender people. Sorry for the bigoted commentary here but Mesa folks can’t sleep on this recall election.
