This is the longest winter of my life. And we still have at least three more months of it. Michigan is a long way from Memphis. My in laws in Memphis had on short sleeved shirts when we FaceTimed with them on Christmas, and said the temp was 70 F.

FaceTimed with my husband’s family last night. His niece squealed joyously and loudly when she opened a gift that contained two books.

There were so many dead deer frozen in the still thawing snow banks on the side of the road when I drove to meet a friend a few towns over. I screamed, “It’s a massacre.” I was the only one in the car. Michigan highways are deer graveyards.

Loving this gift by @mbsycamore.bsky.social
A dream rushing forward full of shine, faux fur, and dancing.
“And she touched my back, and said: Where are your wings?
I could feel them right then. It was the way she touched me. Like she was drawing my wings on.”

Tell me again how schools are biased against boys?

In early grief, I had the delusion that I just had to get through it. My fourth Christmas without my mom and sister, I know the grief never goes, never ends, this isn’t something I get through, it’s something I endure. It just is.

This is part of what I mean by “slow civil war.” It’s not coming, it’s here, and there are mounting casualties.
Even in Illinois — a "safe haven" where many have fled as persecution against trans people ramps up in other states — 29 trans teens have died by suicide this year as of Nov. 21, according to a count by Trans Up Front Illinois.

That’s compared to 4 last year, and 6 the year before that.

I went to Frankenmuth which is like a Bavarian-esque Christmas town here in Michigan. I loved the lights, the crepes, and walking in the cold and windy streets while drinking a hot latte.

Woke up to notification of fraudulent charges on my card. Thankfully only one small one went through before the bank blocked that card.

I feel bad when I don’t have money to donate to a friend’s gofundme for medical care because I’ve already donated to other friends’ medical care gofundmes. This fucking country. We should have free healthcare.

I’d like to be a deer. But somewhere faraway from humans and their guns and their cars. As a human, I’d like that too.

Seven deer were frolicking in the snow behind our house. Then they ran to the side and across our neighbor’s yard, and into the field. I love them.

On a post that claims Bill Skarsgard is a scarier Pennywise than Tim Curry, someone commented, “We were 4 when we watched the original IT, you are in your twenties.” Sooooo true!

It’s snowing and the deer are behind our house again. It’s only bright enough to see out back when it snows.

Almost done grading. The end of the first semester of my post-doc fellowship. It went very well. Have an essay and micro-fiction forthcoming. I’m reading for the Meijer Visiting Writers Series in January. Some good things.

It’s still snowing. And there’s deer in my backyard. Sort of magical.

One thing I miss about winter in the south: when it’s snowing like this at midnight, you know you don’t have to set an alarm for in the morning because everything is cancelled. Not the case here.
