My essay collection has been a semi-finalist and finalist in multiple competitions. Going to dive back in for some slight re-arranging and revision. See if I can make it sparkle more.

“If a man wears his riot gear during prayer, will the sacred forsake him? If a man wears his riot gear to the holiday meal, how will he eat? If a man enters the bedroom in his riot gear, how will he make love to his wife? If a man wears his riot gear to tuck in his children, what will they dream?”

Civil rights should never be up for debate! I am glad the corrupt SCOTUS rejected this call.

When I walked into class Wednesday night, the grad students were talking about Pink Flamingos. Melt my heart!

...and less than 24 hours later Condé Nast has fired Lex and the rest of the Teen Vogue political desk, even as stories like this were bringing huge numbers of readers to the site
dissatisfied by the New York Times coverage of Zohran Mamdani?

great news! I talked to the guy Thursday about his campaign’s success at bringing community together beyond this election, and contextualized how it’s potentially shifted youth engagement with politics by simply listening @teenvogue.com
Zohran Mamdani's Establishment-Fighting Campaign Built Community for Young People
“What Mamdani has done is not only inspire and mobilize young people, but he has exposed the establishment and some of their calcified views of participation and inclusion.”

My sister, Lanie Zipoy, won the Harlem International Film Fest’s Mira Nair Rising Female Filmmaker award in 2020. I’m sad Lanie never got to rise due to her life being cut cruelly and suddenly short.

I’ve donated to local pantries and my school’s pantry for students. Billionaires exist, yet I, a post-doc teaching fellow, am donating hoping that people won’t be starved by our government.

Went to a showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show put on by a student org. It was such a celebration of transness, queerness, and all different types of bodies. Gave me a flicker of hope. Allowed me to glimpse the queer future Muñoz wrote of.

Re-reading to teach in the grad class tomorrow night. Love the juxtapositions of art and social critique in these powerful and well-crafted essays. And the use of opera to reveal Detroit in “D is for the Dance of the Hours.”

“…whose sentences often refuse the standards of punctuation and flow like water, like the wind, like the story you have to tell fast in order to get it down before it’s gone. But this short sentence—we don’t know where here is, but we know it’s dark and we can feel the scream.”

I completely checked out of reality today. I explored a pumpkin patch and corn maze. And yes, I did re-enact scenes from Children of the Corn while in the corn maze. Bought a pumpkin. Played glow in the dark Halloween deco mini-golf. Went on a silly Bigfoot tour. And watched Halloween 4.

Reading about HRT/perimenopause on the Mayo Clinic’s site—it says that if HRT isn’t possible for whatever reasons then other options are clinical hypnosis, cognitive behavioral therapy, and weight loss. Like just in case, here is the default treatment for when modern science fails women.

20 federal agents beat a man at my old elementary school. How horrible for the children. How horrible for the man. Memphis needs resources of care and community, not brutality. And I say this as someone who lost her mother and sister to crime in Memphis.
