This is part of the tragedy of a surrender now. It invites more pain and suffering by emboldening the regime. Why should they listen to a weak opposition?
Schumer and the Dems are about to teach Trump the lesson that they’ll cave whenever he abuses power to sufficiently hurt people.

Hero’s of the day - In a small town of Beckley, WV, Kendra Sullivan staged a one-woman No Kings protest. She was confronted, had the police called on her, but stood her ground. She was physically threatened. Police came more than once and protected her right to protest. This is how we do it.

This whole thread on the value and purpose of mass protests is fantastic and well worth your time:
In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

Most of the power authoritarians have is freely given. We should not comply with them in advance.

Trump is far weaker than he looks. So is the GOP. We should draw them out, drain them at every opportunity, and fight for people’s wellbeing at every turn.

We have been sent here to fight for people.
AOC: I think there's two things that are happening at once: One, there absolutely is an unprecedented abuse of power, destruction of norms, erosion of our government and our democracy in order to prop up an authoritarian style of governance

However, they are weaker than they look…

I can’t believe it’s even necessary to say that NO city in ANY country deserves or should be INVADED by its federal government.

I thought we cared about people. Isn’t that the real point? Everyone needs liberation, most of all the people who don’t know.

When I see people online, even in jest, suggest that people living in Republican-controlled states should be abandoned because of their politicians, I feel a deep heartache. New York CREATED Donald Trump and none of y’all are ever talk about it the way you disparage Alabama or Mississippi.

The COVID-19 pandemic undermined the right in several key ways:

1) It showed us which workers are essential and empowered them.

2) It showed that the markets can’t solve everything.

2) It threatened GOP political prospects in a critical election.

4) Government relief proved popular and effective

He is understated about it but Murphy says some extraordinary things here. It's worth watching all of this. Remember when they won big games nobody would drink until Uecker was there. It was a matter of honor.
“Somehow, it seems like he’s watching over us. I said he’s not going to miss a game. He definitely was here tonight. Yeli proved it.”

Pat Murphy on Bob Uecker is worth your time.

Inspired by Pope Leo and moved to defy the Trump immigration crackdown, Detroit’s Archbishop Edward Weisenburger led a procession of 250 clergy and lay faithful to the ICE regional field office.

“The vast majority of undocumented immigrants are forced into their situation," Weisenburger said.

If you grew up in a household with an evangelical right-wing parent, as I did, you already know that the dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education, like the reversal of Roe v. Wade, is the culmination of a 50-year project.

Our task isn't to be cruel, or to make people suffer. Our task is to fucking build a movement that can take power so that suffering may be reduced.

And being cruel behind a keyboard doesn't help to build that movement.

It makes the world uglier without making the world better.

Reminders:

"Concentration camps" aren't the same as "extermination camps." Both were/are horrific.

Most Nazi camps were *outside Germany*, away from the eyes of German citizens.

Those trains? Were to, uh, deport the category of people whose lives were deemed unimportant.

Never again is now.
