The wife is in the middle of directing her high school's annual musical. We watched MR. SCORSESE ("The Scorzaza Show") and she seems to have taken real inspiration from it. Not from his style, but from the WORK required, the dedication and passion and attention to detail. It warms my cold heart.

The rescue organization gave our cat the name Merv the Perv. We changed it, but it still haunts us.

This has moved into "playing it for my puzzled wife" territory for me.

I genuinely gasped at this. One of my favorite actors of all time who was in many of my favorite films of all time. I was very lucky to see him in person at the Museum of the Moving Image when they showed RAN some years ago. It's a treasured memory.
hearing reports out of Japan that Tatsuya Nakadai has passed away at 92. RIP to a legit legend.

Idly listening to Bernstein's recording of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and I keep hearing bits of the STAR WARS main theme. Is it me or is this a known influence for John Williams?

TRAIN DREAMS: A bit like "What if the montages in ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES were the whole movie?," so naturally I loved it. A meditation on the beauty of life, common and uncommon. Very glad I saw it on a big screen.

A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE - The ending convinced me: ZERO DARK THIRTY is definitely pro-torture.

I was very much struck by this while touring Nazi sites in Berlin back in 2012. "Oh, they weren't smart, they were just brutal and shameless."
When you read about the Nazis it's shocking how much of what they did was just rank gangsterism in terms of both motive and method. As a practical matter the Night of the Long Knives is indistinguishable from the baptism/massacre montage in The Godfather. "Today I settled all Party business."
Went back to the history of the Sicilian Mafia to illustrate something obvious but worth stating explicitly: The Trump administration behaves like an organized crime syndicate running a protection racket, not a representative government www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

One episode in, DEATH BY LIGHTNING is an ideal miniseries for me: historical, funny, "handsomely mounted," and most important, it put Johnny Cash's version of "Mister Garfield" in my head.

A group of people were clapping and cheering outside and I can only assume they just heard the good news.
🚨🚨🚨 The jury has reached a verdict. Sean Dunn, aka the DC Sandwich Guy, has been found NOT GUILTY of assault.

I saw FLASH GORDON for the first time right before the pandemic, and when he popped up at the beginning I was like, "Okay, this is gonna be good." (PS He passed in 2005; this is the anniversary.)
RIP William Hootkins. Thanks for all the memories!

My mother had never been to Europe when we took a family trip to Italy that began in Rome. We stepped into a random church and the grandeur of it stunned her so much she started crying. "This is bullshit," she said. (Not as commentary but more like "How can something make me feel this much?!")
One thing about Rome is you can take a detour into any random church and suddenly take in absolutely GOATed sculptures, paintings, and more. The Catholic Church really went off!!!
